Mount Vernon is a city in Linn County, Iowa, United States, adjacent to the city of Lisbon. The city's population was 3,390 when the 2000 census figures were released, but that number was later revised to 3,808 because the Census Bureau had incorrectly reported that 418 residents of a Cornell College dormitory in Mount Vernon lived in the nearby city of Bertram. A special census taken by the city in 2004 counted 4,171 residents. The population was 4,506 at the 2010 census. Mount Vernon is part of the Cedar Rapids Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Excellent place to meet between Iowa City and Cedar Rapids. Amazingly warm day (T-shirt weather) for this time of year. We met another couple and had a very nice hike along the ridge line above the river. The late colors were beautiful, as was the sunset. It was nice to see so many families with young kids getting out hiking. The last time we were there was a weekday and the park was nearly empty. We have paddled downstream in the past. Just below the dam is a convenient place to put in your canoe or kayak. There are more scenic rivers to paddle than this if you are willing to drive a bit further or consider Lake Macbride.

This is a freebie as you travel the backroads of Iowa. The folks here have taken Grant Wood's famous painting and had it super-imposed on a barn along the way. In addition, there's other artwork on the barn that makes this a must-see traveling through Iowa.

This annual event is one we attended with our children and now our grandchildren. It's a pancake breakfast with demonstrations on how the sap is harvested and how the early settlers made syrup. The pavilion is amazing and there's hiking trails to work off the pancakes and sausage. A wonderful family outing.
