Valley Forge National Historical Park

Valley Forge National Historical Park, one of more than 400 national parks managed by the National Park Service, is a 3,452 acre national park located approximately 18 miles northwest of Philadelphia. Valley Forge National Historical Park is nationally significant as the location of the 1777-78 winter encampment of the Continental Army under General George Washington. The historic landscapes, structures, objects, and archeological and natural resources at Valley Forge are tangible links to one of the most defining events in our nation’s history Here the Continental Army under Washington's leadership emerged as a cohesive and disciplined fighting force.

We received a very informative tour by the museum curator, giving us a glimpse into the life of the privileged 18th century Potts family and their descendants. Interesting info about the iron industry in colonial times. Due to the pandemic, our tour was scheduled by phone, and limited to members of one household.

Merrymead is a favorite place to visit any time of year, but it's a great ice cream visit on a summer afternoon. Lots of varieities of delicious fresh ice cream, quick service and and interesting shop for sweets and Pennsylvania Dutch type canned and baked goods. They sell larger take home quantities of ice cream for big celebrations too. I also love their ever changing outdoor garden items that vary with the season, like their pumpkins and decor shop in autumn.

We went on a trip with school. The place was magical. The carousel was lovingly restored in an effort to help revitalize Pottstown. It is definitely worth visiting. The volunteers who run it obviously take pride and joy in seeing the looks on the faces of those who ride the carousel. It is the perfect place for a party with lots of tables and seating. They have a snack bar as well. If you are in the area, make this a stop.
