We almost didn't go on the wagon tour of the vineyards and that would have been a huge loss. My husband, my mother and our niece spent a fantastic afternoon with Luca touring the lovely vineyards around Montespertoli. We saw parts of the area that we would never have gotten to on our own and learned more about the history of the area. We all agreed that it was one of the top 3 things we did on our entire trip to Italy. The pace allowed us to really enjoy the beautiful scenery. As a horseperson, I loved Luca's relationship with Drago and Birba, they worked hard to give us a wonderful afternoon. I highly recommend you take advantage of this unique experience.

Castello Sonnino is one of the few untouched dwellings in Tuscany and is strategically situated in the village of Montespertoli : only 20 km from Florence on the ancient and beautiful Etruscan road to Volterra . It is part of the Italian Historical Dwelling Association ( ADSI ). Castello Sonnino, which previously belonged to the Machiavelli 's , was purchased by the Baron Isacco Sonnino at the beginning of the 19th century , is composed by different architectural structures, where the oldest parts are the XIII century Tower and the Chapel ( now one of the Castle's apartments ) .The main building , the " Villa " , dated from the XVI century still contains the historical Archives of the Prime Minister Barone Sidney Sonnino with all the documents regarding the First War World , the Treaty of Versailles and his Library. Castello Sonnino is now the home of the Baron Alessandro e Baroness Caterina de Renzis Sonnino . In the premises it's also located an Enoteca with a Restaurant which is open everyday from 9 am to 8 pm . We daily offer wine tastings with tours of the Winery included the monumental cellars, light lunches, dinners, and tours of the Castle and the Tower. Better to book in advance. Starting from Spring 2014, besides the flat in the Tower (2 double bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, living room and kitchen), we can offer to our guests more accomodation in the newly restored apartments of the Winemaker and Farmhouse. Both furnished in the local country style of last century, using only antique furnitures coming from the old rooms of the castle. In the Farmhouse: three bedrooms, two bathrooms, very big kitchen with big old fireplace, and sitting room. Large private garden where is possible to relax in the shade of the Tower. The Winemaker apartment: three double bedrooms with three bathrooms and kitchen. Terrace with breathtaking view of the Montespertoli valley with the Sonnino vineyards. In front of the Terrace is the old "Aia" of the winery where is possible to relax and enjoy a great Chianti sunset.

What a wonderful surprise! It was a rainy day in Tuscany and the concierge at our hotel recommended this winery and set us up with a private wine tasting and tour of this historic castle and grounds, led by David. The history behind the Sonnino family and the tour of the property was amazing. We got to see the grapes picked and laid out on the mats for the making of their prized Vinsantos. They also offer a luncheon with their wine tasting, which we did not do, only because we had just eaten before we arrived, but, the tasting and education on the wines was excellent. Be sure to call ahead to schedule a tasting and tour, as the staff is limited.

The gallery has been operating for about 30 years in the production of artistic ceramics and as 700 years ago, only creates ceramics made and hand painted. This shop is a little jewel in the commercial landscape of Montelupo. The owner Salvatore Mirenda, creates objects with the ancient technique of the lathe, the activity that takes place over 35 years, after he inherited from his father Sebastian, a master potter. Salvatore continues the family tradition of working with clay, enriching it with new shapes and decorations. Our production is not limited to the reproduction of classical works, but adds that touch of creativity, originality and quality that distinguishes our work. The gallery offers the opportunity 'to order and buy directly from the factory or via email.

My wife is making ceramics, this is her hobby and her passion. Naturally, we visit ceramics manufacturers everywhere we travel. This includes Italy, of course, Tuscany in particular. But La Galleria in Montelupo is one of our strongest impressions to date.
They have a few lines so unusual and beautiful it is hard to leave the shop! They are the best in Montelupo for sure and maybe in the entire Tuscany. Their poppies line in particular is artistically stunning (I believe it has been developed by the son of the owner). Other lines are not less impressive. The owners are super-friendly and are ready to show and discuss everything, they are really proud of what they are doing.
A piece of advice. Allocate at least an hour if you plan to go there.

Stopped by San Michele a Torri for wine tasting and lunch as part of our private shore excursion with Nicola Scovenna. Our wine tasting & light lunch included 3 red wines, 1 dessert wine, an assortment of meats and cheeses, bruschetta with EVOO, heirloom, tomatoes, and boiled eggs from farm chickens. Cost was 20 euros per person. The guided tour of the winery prior to our meal made us feel welcome and excited to experience their products. We were graciously hosted and thoroughly enjoyed the time we spent here.

We went on a Friday , it was definitely busy. Parking is down low near the highway, then a small bus takes visitors up the hill to the winery. There is no shade in the parking lot, so don't leave any wines in the car on a warm day.
We booked the afternoon Bottaia Cru tour, which started out with lunch on the top floor at the restaurant. We tried some Bolgheri wines with lunch, the Cont'ugo and Guado al Tasso. Lunch featured lamb chops and was delicious.
Carlotta was Our tour guide , and she's great. We got a look at the barrel rooms, the fermentation tanks, and the mini museum. Our visit concluded with a tasting in a glass enclosed dining room overlooking the barrel room. We got to taste the Tignanello, the Badia a passagnano gran selezione, and a Brunello.
We really enjoyed our afternoon at this exciting new facility.

Certaldo Alto is nice example of a medieval hill top town, pleasant intricate streets, period buildings and panoramic views.
Sunset from any of these towns is always a joy.
There are a good selection of destinations to imbibe and or eat.
To avoid feeling disappointed, better to visit this before going to San Gimignano

This small and beautiful cemetery was donated to the United States as a permanent burial ground without charge or taxation. There is a stunning memorial that is above the burial sites. There are 4,398 headstones in eight plots that lie below the memorial. This is a quiet and peaceful place that brought me to tears. Try to be here before 5:00pm for the flag lowering ceremony. If you want, you can get involved in folding the flag. You will really be moved and I feel privileged to have experienced this amazing place.

The Palazzo Pretoria admission, along with the other two included sites mentioned, is a fabulous deal. Here we study a variety of historic periods, scores of artistic and archeological vistas involving outstanding preservation and the bonus of much wonderful architecture. Our cameras were going full blaze.
Be sure to leave a solid two hours plus for all three sites, then reward yourselves for all the work with an excellent meal either alto or basso. For myself, I'd once agin check out the culinary wonders of Osteria La Valetta, a thirty second walk from the funicular basso.
