Monemvasia Fortress

Reviewed By lindadownunder - Perth, Australia

My husband and I stayed in a traditional house for 2 nights and loved the whole experience.
Follow the meandering cobblestone lanes all over the island to discover all the fortress has to offer.
The smooth cobblestones are very slippery especially when wet so wear good non slip walking shoes.
The climb up to the castle takes about 20mins via the stairs and the sea views from the top are wonderful.

Agia Sofia Church

Reviewed By Oguh_56 - Cambridge, United Kingdom

The Byzantine castle is situated on the top of 'the rock' and is accessible by narrow stone path which leaves at 90 degrees to the Main Street in the lower town.
It is a strenuous climb but plenty of people make it up there. Wear lightweight shoes with good grip.
A great deal of very impressive restoration work has been completed to the gate and Aghia Sofia. The light streaming into the church is breathtaking.
It is a once in a lifetime trip and experience and the view is stunning.

We were so fortunate to have the opportunity to see the Icon at the Christos Elkomenos. With the theft and damage to the icon, it has only been recently returned to its home, with significant security precautions in place. The church is lovely, but definitely visit to experience the icon.

Edodimopolio Honey Shop is a treasure trove of Greek flavors. There are many interesting honeys to taste, the heather honey is especially interesting and unlike any honey I had every tasted. The "caramel" candies are not only delicious but are also miniature works of candy art. The shop owner is warm and friendly. We bought many gifts from this shop. We recommend Edodimopolio Honey Shop to anyone visiting Monemvasia!

We had an outstanding day, visiting the ruined medieval city of Monemvasia. Walking the 200m causeway from the port, we met our guide, Effie, on schedule at the entrance to the walled fortress of the lower city. When not guiding groups through Monemvasia and adjoining cites of antiquities, Effie works as an archaeologist on the Upper Town site. So, we were without question in good hands in terms of the wealth of knowledge she held and shared with us on the tour. Effie's English is flawlessly fluent and she does an outstanding job bringing the culture of this fascinating village to life through the anecdotes and stories she shared. She was such a delight to be with, we were saddened when it came time to part ways. The whole excursion was an unquestionable highlight of our travels in the Peloponnese.
