What to do and see in Mittenwald, Bavaria: The Best Free Things to do

May 15, 2022 Renato Branum

As automobiles became popular in the early 20th century, quiet little towns along popular roads suddenly found themselves tourist destinations. Mittenwald is one of them. This small Bavarian town in the northern foothills of the Alps, on the route to Innsbruck, Austria, has been a popular stop since the 1930s. For challenging walks, many area ski runs become hiking trails in summer. And visit the local violin museum (Mittenwald is known for the manufacture of fine string instruments).

Mittenwald - lovely little jewel, unspoiled and beautiful. The houses with fresco painting, buzzing bier gardens on a lazy summer Sunday afternoon, the beautiful church, cable car to Karwendel peaks to stand in both Austria and Germany - all this makes make for an unforgettable experience. The old town is straight out of a fairy tale - with its painted building against the backdrop of the Alps, it is breathtakingly beautiful.

St. Peter und Paul

We arrived in this beautiful village on the day they were bringing the goats down from the mountains, and it was very busy with tourists; lining the street after finding out what was going on , we also waited patiently for them. A while later and still no goats l decided to go see the church ...oh WOW what a beautiful church, l didn't expect to see in this small village . Its beautiful; with its architecture and frescoes, & painted ceiling all lovingly restored. The pews have name plates on them in German Gothic. It was nice to see it without all the crowd and really appreciate all the workmanship that has gone into all the wood cravings as well. You must stop by if visiting this village, you cannot miss it , right by the hand painted tower .
