What to do and see in Midtown, New York (NY): The Best Department Stores

January 30, 2022 Hector Krause

Conquering New York in one visit is impossible. Instead, hit the must-sees – the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art – and then explore off the beaten path with visits to The Cloisters or one of the city’s libraries. Indulge in the bohemian shops of the West Village or the fine dining of the Upper West Side. The bustling marketplace inside of Grand Central Station gives you a literal taste of the best the city has to offer.

Saks Fifth Avenue is still one of the main Christmas in New York must sees. The decorated holiday windows where you stand shoulder to shoulder in a crowd to get a peek of, are elaborate and changed each year. The magical light and music show on the front of the building is something to stop and enjoy.

Macy's Herald Square

From its inception, Macy's Herald Square was a store unlike any other. Over the past 150 years, it has become a true New York City icon. Built in 1902, Macy's Herald Square was the first building to have the modern-day escalator, and it has continued to be a trendsetter. Today, "America's Largest Department Store" covers an entire city block with 11 levels of the latest fashions for you and your home. Macy's offers a full-service Visitor Center on the Mezzanine Level, plus restaurants throughout the store and exciting events almost every day.

You don't have to be a die hard shopper to appreciate the history and character of this iconic store. While there are many floors of merchandise where you can find unique treasures the gem is located at the center of the building with the original wooden escalators. Even if you don't have any shopping to do on the 7th floor, take the escalators all the way up and all the way down!

The best Christmas windows in years. Celebrating the 50's they will turn your head and make you look side ways to relish this ingenious and highly original adaptation of life in the 50's. Avoid a weekend if possible as the crowds outside are sometimes five or six deep but patience is a virtue and will reward you in the end. Great spot for photo ops with the kids, your family and loved ones. Keep walking down 5th Avenue and watch the light and music show light up Saks Fifth Avenue. Another amazing and creative production that will stay with you throughout the Christmas season and beyond that. They are all worth the crowds and throngs of people.

H&M

Reviewed By YitzchakMiskin - Ramat Gan, Israel

My Asian-born wife (who had never been to America) and I were touring America and were now in New York City. The first place we visited was the capital of New York City – Times Square. We had an hour plus wait until our Circle Line Cruise boat departed, and so to kill some time, we walked over to Times Square. I don’t know about killing time but my wife surely killed a lot of money in Times Square. I remember from my college days in New York City that the actual Times Square was the junction of 42nd Street and Broadway. I decided to show her this landmark and lo and behold, there is a tall, huge H&M department store right there. I asked my wife if we should go in. Stupid question! She was in before I heard the answer. She was like a dying-of-thirst wanderer in the desert who just discovered an oasis of cool refreshing water. It was actually kind of fun to watch her in action. The store is simply put – a very exciting, attractive, modern department store full of quality merchandise for reasonable prices. Cheaper prices than we would have to pay in our own country (Israel). Men, if you’re coming to Times Square with a female partner, be forewarned!
