What to do and see in Michigan, United States: The Best Farms

November 25, 2021 Misti Hsu

Think you need an ocean for a beach? Think again. There are miles and miles of sandy lakefront beaches in Michigan (thanks to the four Great Lakes that border it). The west coast of Michigan has especially nice beaches—try a rental in Muskegon, Grand Haven or Saugatuck. You won’t need a car when visiting Mackinac Island. In fact, they’re not allowed—this lovely Victorian resort town is pedestrian-only.

Just before Thanksgiving they had a pie tasting event. Wow... Talk about fantastic tasting pies. We have enjoyed their blueberries and now are hooked on their baked goods as well. You really need to try their blueberry donuts. Heavenly!

Up North Blueberry Farm

Up North Blueberry Farm is an impressively well-run and impeccably maintained establishment. Visiting any public space during the current Covid pandemic requires a certain amount of faith, but UNBF has implemented very clear but firm protocols for ensuring our safety, while still making it a welcoming experience. My partner and I spent about 1 1/4 hrs. there last week, and gathered about 15 lbs. of berries. We will definitely be back!

The Country Mill

The Country Mill orchard is the only mid-Michigan cider mill where a family can pick fresh apples, peaches, and blueberries at the same farm. We also offer our own locally grown vegetables such as sweet corn, winter squash, and pumpkins. In the fall, come enjoy tasting our homemade wines, hard cider, pies, donuts, and other baked goods. We also offer tours on Tuesday through Friday in September and October. Many activities on the weekends in the fall. Weddings and private parties year around.

My daughter and her family and I spent a Saturday here in late October. It’s pretty hectic on the weekends so be prepared for crowds. But a great place to pick your pumpkins out for Halloween - either in the field or from the huge selection right by the main entrance. You can also pick apples in their orchard or from bags in the shop. All sorts of apples available for all uses. We come every year and always come home with several pumpkins and at least one bag of apples, a dozen donuts and some fresh cider. It’s a small operation but plenty to see and do.

Centennial Dairy Farm. Operating modern dairy farm milking with robots. Country Dairy bottles milk and makes cheese and ice cream from the milk from their own cows. Tours are available to see the processing plant and cows and calves. In addition we have an onsite restaurant offering a wide variety of grilled Paninis, wraps, salads, and burgers. And you can top it off with our fresh ice cream in our ice cream parlor.

A working dairy farm where you can have an amazing lunch, buy their fresh milk, cheese and ice cream as well as take a tour of the Farm. Good for children. We enjoyed our visit very much. Very nice and helpful employees.
