What to do and see in Mestre, Veneto: The Best Things to do Good for Kids

November 12, 2021 Jacquiline Delozier

While Venice’s mainland suburb of Mestre has a history and character all its own dating back to medieval times, it owes its growth and fortune to its more powerful offshore neighbor. Unfortunately, it’s everything Venice is not: modern, industrial and cheap. But while they may not compare to the romantic canals of Venice, Mestre does have attractions of its own, including the Torre (Tower) dell'Orologio and the Duomo (Cathedral) di San Lorenzo, located on its town square, Piazza Ferretto.

Piazza Ferretto

We had decided to stay in the Mestre district instead of frenetic Venice. What a great decision as Trip Advisor had recommended Piazza Ferretto. What a great decision to visit there. We spent the afternoon taking in the sights and views of the historical buildings and then stayed for supper - a traditional Italian dish of lasagne served in the Piazza with live music nearby.

Stazione Di Venezia Mestre

Reviewed By kateiel - Patterson, United States

This is a bustling train station with connections to many places throughout Italy and Europe. In addition, they have a bus station right outside that allows you to access buses to many other locations. There are also several rental car locations in the vicinity. It is easy to navigate the boards to know what platform you will need for onward travel. We had a problem while here and the Italo staff both here and in Venice Santa Lucia were absolutely wonderful.
