Melnik Zamek

Reviewed By UD K

This castle, where several Bohemian queens lived in the past, is a nice place to visit less than an hour from Prague. It is an average-looking castle, of which there are so many in Europe. Its main attraction is the rare and very large collection of hand-drawn maps of European cities from the 17 century, and some Renaissance paintings.
It is next to the Melnik Vineyards, and has a restaurant with Terrace that in the summer offers a great view of the Elba and Vltava rivers where one can sample the Melnik wines.
One can also try the wine tasting sessions and a tour of the castle's cellars.
They offer guided tours, but we walked through the castle without a guide.
Note that they do not offer senior discounts.

Stare Hrady

Reviewed By japapuss - Evanston, Illinois

They have literally used an old Castle as the backdrop for presenting a series of fairy tales, intertwined with bits of actual history. Unfortunately, the presentation is entirely in Czech. So if you do not understand the language, you're out of luck. They DO offer printed guides in English, German, and Polish, as well as one or two other languages, but it loses a lot on the translation. And if you are more interested in the actual history of the Castles and grounds, then you'll be sorely disappointed.

Hrad Kokorin

Reviewed By Karina K - Millingen aan de Rijn, The Netherlands

It is a nice caste, the guide and the visit just cost us 2 Euro per person. Unfortunately for us, the guide was a Czech lady who did not speak English. We got some translations on paper instead. It is a nice castle and worth a visit. Be aware: The castle is up a hill, so be aware that you have to be good on your feet. Dogs are allowed, WC and a cafe/canteen are situated at the parking lot at the foot of the castle.

The Melnik Underground

Reviewed By bilboburgler - Otley, United Kingdom

Tours run several times a day, starting at the Tourist Info office. You go down steps to reach an underground area excavated under the centre of town to reach the water table before the locals realised that it would be better to pipe water in from outside. There's quite a long horizontal stretch before reaching the impressively large well at the end. It's a bit like the Etruscan underground at Chiusi in Italy, but not nearly as old or as interesting. English speakers are given an A4 sheet of paper at the start with the basic history and other information, but to get the full lowdown you'd need to understand the guide who talked non-stop in Czech to the other two visitors and paid us no attention whatsoever during the 30 minute tour. The excavations are reasonably high (so no crouching) and the floor is quite level, but some might find it claustrophobic although the lighting isn't bad. But when you read the English info you learn that Melnik basically means "crumbly", and the town was named as such because the rock is weak, which doesn't inspire confidence when you're several metres down with traffic passing overhead. It's cheap enough, so worth a visit if you've nothing better to do for half an hour. Children would probably enjoy it as long as they're old enough to cope with all the steps.

Had read about this cafe before I arrived in Melnik. I went last night and it was delightful. Great range of teas and coffees and a few snacks. There are 4 floors and one for the view. I am going back tonight. Will attempt the spiral stairs to admire the view:-). Give this place a try.

Regional Museum Melnik

Reviewed By LaurieLoo24 - Prague, Czech Republic

This is one of the most random museums I've ever been to! First, we were escorted around the corner to an old pram museum - with prams dating back to the beginning of the 1900s, and then we went back to the museum, which is part of an old monastery. There were a few interesting things to see, and then we got to see part of the underground wine cellar. It was so random, but the guide was so sweet and eager to show us the museum, and it was definitely a tour I won't forget! Worth a visit!
