Eseltjiesrus Donkey Sanctuary

Reviewed By Gands48 - Cape Town, South Africa

We saw this on things to do in the McGregor region. It was a lovely warm day and we were greeted by a young guide who was extremely well spoken and well mannered.
We were given the safety talk and then entered into the donkey paddock.
There were quite a few donkeys ranging in age from around three to over forty I think. All have there names and if you are patient they will get curious and come to see you.
Many of these animals were rescued from terrible circumstances and are now pretty contented in their new surroundings.
At the end of the tour my daughter adopted a donkey, Bella.

Boesmanskloof Hiking Trail

Reviewed By Frogy007 - Cape Town Central, South Africa

Hiked from Mc Gregor to Greyton. Follow sign post to Greyton. Eagle's Nest Accommodation lies on your right hand side while the trail winds down to the river. After about 1.5 hours you get to Oak Water Fall/ rockpool which is a nice place for a rest to cool down as well as rocks offer some shade. Afterwards the trails leads uphill which can be strenuous for less fit hikers or challenging on a hot day. There is little to no wind to cool down take 3 - 4 l of water. After the peak trail becomes a jeep track which I found a bit boring to walk. Rich fynbos vegetation and stunning mountain views makes the 4 - 5 hours hike special.

Paul de Jongh is a master potter. He is so creative...he is also a delightful man. I have purchased several pieces which I treasure.
Paul and his assistant are always on hand to explain and advise. Paul's wife Nina oversees and occasionally throws the odd pot...

We've been coming here consistently and I'm sure nothing will change. We always stay here at least once a year and all my previous reviews have been about the accommodation, which I might add is always top notch and you simply don't get this value for money, high quality places, any more. This review is going to be about their wines and goodies on offer. It's a small boutique winery which has that amazing country friendliness and like the top Western Cape restaurant down the road (Karoux), as awarded by Eat Out magazine, everything is beautifully casual, relaxed and nobody is trying to prove a point. It is a wonderful way to experience their amazing wines, grappa and limited made in the area, farm deli treats. If you're a guest of the farm, there is an amazing pool area and wonderful high standards are maintained for guests by the incredibly kind as well as rational hosts.

Lord's Wines

Lord's Wines was established in 2006 where viticulturist, Jacie Oosthuizen, turned his love for wine and cricket into a cellar. The whole concept is based on the Lord's cricket ground in London. High up on the northern slopes of the Mountains surrounding Robertson, in the lush Mc Gregor valley, you will stumble across a gravel road that will lead you on the road to nowhere. At the end of this striking rainbow, you will find Lord’s Wines, cradled amidst fynbos and Proteas. At 500m above sea level, where the vineyards are the highest in the Robertson Valley, a breathtaking panoramic view made the call to establish Lord’s. This cooler climate and real terroir, where nature’s bounty has chosen high altitude for cooler temperatures, where sun, water, soil and slopes are melded, work in perfect harmony to produce cultivars like Pinot Noir, Shiraz and Chardonnay.

I can honestly say that this is probably the ONLY wine tasting we have ever done where we have enjoyed literally every single wine we tasted. The Sauvignon blanc was delightfully refreshing and as someone who swore to never drink MCC Brut I must humbly admit to being a new fan of Lord's MCC Brut Rose. What an idyllic spot too. Just a perfect morning all round. If you can't get there, look out for their wines - worth every cent.

Edna Fourie Gallery

Reviewed By Daisylu2005 - Cape Town

Whilst in McGregor we came upon this artist's gallery in the main road. Set in a pretty garden, you enter into a haven of tranquility and magnificent paintings all showcased in a modern way but in a traditional old building typical of this lovely town. Edna is a true artist who works her magic via different themed series of paintings. She will ship to your doorstep via courier if necessary, her prices are fair, there is none of the usual gallery commission payable as its all her work. Edna was there to explain her work to us and made us and our dogs (who stayed outside of course) feel very welcome. This is a must do stop when in McGregor or the Robertson area.
