What to do and see in Maui, Hawaii (HI): The Best Golf Courses

May 16, 2022 Franklyn Hardiman

The Hawaiian island of Maui is a destination for true nature lovers. The ethereal bamboo forest and churning waterfalls in Haleakala National Park can be explored via the Waimoku Falls Trail. Stretch out on warm, golden sands or hit the surf for an unforgettable windsurfing or snorkeling session. Driving the scenic road to Hana along the island’s northeastern shore will be among the most spectacular journeys of your life. Time stands still at the Hawaiian village of Keanae, definitely worth a visit.

The Havens Experience

45 minute golf lesson with David Havens, PGA, located at Maui Nui Golf Club at the driving range. Havens is the Aloha Section PGA Golf Professional of the Year and Teacher of the Year. Let’s have fun learning golf!

Reviewed By AzCOJools - Parker, United States

We had such a fun and helpful lesson with immediate improvement in golf swing. David Havens is an excellent instructor who uses a variety of teaching techniques to help you improve (or correct a bad habit). We didn’t bring clubs to Maui so he loaned us some clubs so we could work on swing while we were visiting Maui! Highly recommend a lesson with him!

We stayed at kapalua golf villas in March 2018. The front desk manager, Romel was exceptional. Exceptional customer service. The entire staff was exceptional. We were not ocean front but ocean view and we saw a whale breach even from that distance. We had a two bedroom two bath condo, with a huge private balcony, part covered part open. Very quiet condo, beautiful grounds and shared but private pool, never crowded, 2 to 4 couples at most. Free shuttle service to beach and restaurants on property. The tavern near our condo was the best, very friendly and good food, reasonable for Maui.

Wailea Golf Club - Emerald Course

This lush and tropical layout measures 6,825 yards from the back, featuring four to six tee boxes on every hole, allowing golfers to tailor the course to their level of skill.

When I arrived at the starter's station for my 9:00 tee time, the people I'd been paired with did not show up, so the starter sent me out on my own. Bumped into 2 foursomes along the way and got a quick invitation to play through each time. Finished in just under 3 1/2 hours - my kind of golf! Course conditions were excellent from tee boxes through the greens. Generous fairways and well-tended greens. Even from the old man tees there is a nice mix of holes - left and right turns, a few blind shots, plenty of sand, some water. Very forgiving, too, at least for me. Pulled a few drives into lava and trees, and found my ball in the middle of the fairway each time! Course staff (from the pro shop to the guy who dropped by bag off at my car at the end of the round) were uniformly friendly, helpful and pleasant. Cart lady showed up regularly with water and a smile. Cloudless skies, low 80s, and outstanding ocean views topped off a perfect golf day. Thanks, Wailea!

Maybe the best views on Maui for a golf course, especially from the back 9. Nice & wide forgiving fairways, numerous bunkers, great twilight rates and free junior golf for kids 17 and under! How can you pick any other golf in Wailea or Makena? Some construction right next to the 10th hole sucks but oh well, thats what mulligans are for.

Pukalani Country Club

Set in the gentle hillsides of "Up-Country" Maui, Pukalani Country Club overlooks the Pacific Ocean and offers breath-taking panoranic views of the Valley Isle of Maui. The Pukalani Country Club is nestled at the 1,100 foot elevation level of world famous Mount Haleakala, an extinct volcano whose name in Hawaiian means "House of the Rising Sun" and is appropriately reflected as the golf course's logo. Pukalani's 18 holes were designed by golf course architect Bob Baldock who designed more than 69 public and private golf courses throughout the United States. The Pukalani Country Club's greenery covers nearly 160 acres. Built in 1980, the course is 6,962 yards long from the championship tees, plays to a par 72, and features 19 greens in its 18-hole layout! On hole #3, golfers may choose a tough iron shot across a ravine and into the wind for one green, or a challenging chip shot straight down to a well-trapped green several hundred feet below into the ravine. No other golf course in Hawaii can compare or offer you this unique setting and challenge of our hole #3. "Pukalani" which in Hawaiian means "Entrance to Heaven" certainly describes Pukalani Country Club!

Great course and very well kept. Rivals some of the most expensive courses on the island with their A+ maintenance and course care. Course rewards you when you hit it straight and challenges you if you're struggling to keep it in the fairway. Bermuda greens are very well kept. I've played a lot of the most expensive courses on this island and this is by far the best deal. For price, course quality and layout, it's the best deal on the island.

There are three great public courses in Wailea: Gold, Emerald and Blue. This is the order of difficulty There is a good driving range located where Gold/Emerald are located. Blue has no range but you can use the main range on the day you play Blue. You get 10% of clothes at the pro shops on the day you play. At the range certain days are mars only so check ahead. There is a cheaper twilight rate so check it out. Also remember that it can rain in the afternoon. Very friendly staff and good parking.
