February 20, 2022 Lashaunda Abraham

The Hawaiian island of Maui is a destination for true nature lovers. The ethereal bamboo forest and churning waterfalls in Haleakala National Park can be explored via the Waimoku Falls Trail. Stretch out on warm, golden sands or hit the surf for an unforgettable windsurfing or snorkeling session. Driving the scenic road to Hana along the island’s northeastern shore will be among the most spectacular journeys of your life. Time stands still at the Hawaiian village of Keanae, definitely worth a visit.

Hana Lava Tube

We didn't get into Thurston Lava Tube on Hawaii so this was a treat when I saw the sign on the road. I have never seen stalactites in a lava tube but this one has them. The lava was dripping I guess then hardened. Very unusual.

Kalahaku Overlook

Reviewed By Toyota1994 - Chicago, United States

Kalahaku Overlook is an awesome overlook in Haleakla National Park along the Crater Highway. The views of the volcanic crater and the cinder cones are breathtaking. Our eyes keep wandering back and forth to not give up the amazing scenery. The overlook has ample parking; the climb from the parking lot to the overlook is short but has some incline. The shelter at the top has sign posts explaining the views and the human history associated with the place. Do not miss stopping ta Kalahaku Overlook.

Haleakala Crater

A dormant volcano measuring 10,000 feet above sea level, it is Maui's highest point.

Although you have to wake up very early to make it to the top of the crater to watch the sun rise above the clouds, this is a must do- once in a lifetime opportunity. Well, maybe you can go more than once in your lifetime... It is amazing once you realize that you are above the clouds and then to see the beautiful colors as the sun rises up. It is cold, but you will survive with a sweatshirt.

Nakalele Blowhole

Reviewed By ToolChick92

Check the waves report every day during your stay. Pick a big swell or windy and wavy day. This will maximize the blowhole activity watching. Wear hiking shoes, take water. If you are not fit enough to climb down slippery and sometimes rocky parts that you will later have to climb back up sometimes pulling yourself up the rocks then watch the blowhole from the top just a short ways from the parking lot. There is an Ohana selling banana bread and coconut water at the parking lot. Park at mile marker 38.5 not 38 ! Much closer more trafficked and apparently safer from the break ins that are common in the area, take your valuables and leave glove compartment open. At mile marker 38 you can park and walk down a short way to see the other side of the rocky structure that has the blow hole for a magnificent view of the water pools and rocky bridge connecting them. It's an amazing feat of nature! Do not get close to it, stay on dry ground, it has massive suction, also a powerful jet of water that sometimes spews rocks, also do not go near the edges by the ocean waves. There have been people know to have fallen in the ocean due to a wave surprising them and tumbling in. There is no rescue here ans no cell service. On the day we went it shot up 60 ft in the air there were a couple of explosions that reached 100 ft. Respect mother nature and keep your eyes on the ocean. Great viewing stops along the way, especially surfer watching at Honolua Bay.

We all loved the Kapalua area of Maui, and this short walk to Dragon’s Teeth is an easy one, and you are rewarded with interesting lava formations, a beautiful view of D.T. Fleming Beach, and a great spot to whale watch. There is a large hedgerow which marks the boundary of the Honokahua Burial Site. Watch for high waves and wet, slippery rocks!

Lava Fields

Reviewed By ashleysylver - Brandon, Canada

I was so excited for this I could barely contain myself. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but my girlfriend had said, “ when you think you’ve gone too far, or have that feeling like it’s not the right way, keep going!”. It made me laugh when we did the drive out, that she was completely right. The drive goes through a couple different ‘sections’, some countryside, then residential, then kind like the road to nowhere land.. but then you just keep going and the landscape opens up to a parking lot, from there you can hike the Lava Fields! Bring a good backpack, good walking/hiking shoes, at least three bottles of water, snacks-good snacks with substance and proteins-, hats and sunscreen to reapply all day. We got lucky because we had cloud cover today we went! But on a regular Maui day, it’s gonna be hot and you are going to need it. The views are incredible, and if you’re willing to look there is some fun wildlife that’s hiding in plain site. From little hermit crabs, little eel-looking creatures, funny birds and ghost crabs sometimes escape the eye if you’re not looking! There is so much appreciation for life within the hike, there is only a few green plants that have popped their way to the surface after all this time, and the land changes in different sections. It is well worth the discovery, so take a morning before it gets too hot and see the sites!

Plenty of parking even if crowded. Plenty of space to explore pools at the end of the road with social distancing. Picturesque with mountains, ocean, volcanic rock and palm trees. Great place to stretch legs on the way to Hana!
