Matagorda Bay Nature Park

Matagorda Bay Nature Park is a 1,600-acre park and preserve at the mouth of the Colorado River on the Matagorda Peninsula. LCRA developed the park to provide recreation, education, wetlands preservation and economic benefit to the region. The park has about two miles of Gulf of Mexico and two miles river frontage and hundreds of acres of coastal marshes and dunes. It is one of the best birding areas in the nation. LCRA acquired the property in 2001 as part of its commitment to preserve natural resources for future generations and to provide science education, recreation and nature tourism opportunities.

We have an RV. The beach itself is very soft and fluffy and not an appropriate surface for the RV. This Nature Park has a very clean campground with concrete pads, water and electric hookups, and sewer connection. The picnic set is made of concrete.

It's run by the LCRA and has showers and laundry room and free wifi.

The LCRA office building has a beautiful glass enclosed view of the estuary, a wifi enabled sitting room and a science display room. Summer programs for kids.

Matagorda Beach

Reviewed By jlehmann - Texas

We enjoyed our afternoon on the beach. We went on a Thursday, so it wasn't crowded at all. From talking to a friend who frequents Matagorda, I don't think that's the case on the weekends.

The sand was fine to drive on when we were there. 2 wheel drive cars were driving on the beach. I think the conditions can vary greatly though.

There was some trash on the beach, mostly spent fireworks. We were there the week after July 4th. I wasn't put off by the amount. If anything, I was expecting more.

The sand is typical beach sand and our kids had a blast playing in it.

Take a canopy and some chairs and a cooler of snacks and beer and you'll have a great time.

Matagorda Cemetery

Reviewed By texasrepublichistory - Dallas, TX

Established about 1830, the Matagorda Cemetery is one of the earliest cemeteries in Texas. It is the resting place of a number of early Texas pioneers, including veterans of the Texas Revolution and Civil War. The cemetery is being restored with the involvement of a very generous donor, who has installed a new fence, planting boxes, and gazebo, and has uncovered and repaired many grave markers. It is now beautifully maintained and fascinating to walk through. The grave markers are an excellent index to Matagorda and south Texas history.
