What to do and see in Marina District, California (CA): The Best Things to do

June 2, 2021 Enedina Augsburger

Every neighborhood in San Francisco has its own personality, from the hippie chic of the Upper Haight to the hipster grit of the Mission. The Marina district boasts trendy bistros and postcard-perfect views of the Golden Gate Bridge, while Noe Valley offers quaint and quiet boutiques. Wave hello to the sea lions at Pier 39, and sample local cheese and charcuterie at the Ferry Building. Sit in on a yoga session in Dolores Park or marvel at the Dutch Windmill across from Ocean Beach.

Walter S. Johnson Park

Site of the San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts.

Reviewed By thetravellingmanUk

Visited the Walter S. Johnson Park with my wife, en' route to the Golden Gate Bridge. This park surrounds the Palace of Fine Arts Gallery, is open to the public, and is maintained by the San Francisco Parks and Recreation Department. The grounds include The Rotunda which is available for weddings and other events. Even although there were a few other tourists around during our visit, the park had such a peaceful atmosphere about it. The complete setting offers stunning views of the Palace of Fine Arts, the Lagoon, and fountain. Walter S. Johnson (1884-1978), a philanthropist, was most famous for his 1959 contribution to the preservation of the Palace of Fine Arts, an act that ensured the endurance of the iconic San Francisco landmark.

Sea Forager Tours

Kirk Lombard's Sea Forager Tours celebrate San Francisco's natural bounty in a two and a half hour coastal walking tour that combines history, ecology, gastronomy, and sustainability. This entertaining and educational low-tide foraging expedition along San Francisco's shoreline delights fishermen, foodies, and foragers who learn how to "poke pole" for the flavorful monkeyface eel, catch rock crabs, throw a "Hawaiian casting net," locate the best local mussel beds, and embrace seasonal local fishes. "Lombard, a rock musician who spent seven years as a fisheries monitor with the Department of Fish and Game, combines a knack for performance with encyclopedic knowledge of all things fish-related." - SF Weekly (winner, Best of the Bay)

We kept being surprised when we'd finish a puzzle and another wall would fall down and a new room would open up. Most rooms seem to have 2 rooms--I think there were something around four here! Puzzles were not over the top challenge-wise and while I think there may have been one element that wasn't quite working our guide stopped by and either fixed it for us or forced it into the next stage. Details were amazing, everything felt well designed, the room definitely encouraged teamwork and there was a nice mix of mental and physical puzzles--would definitely recommend! Even if it is pricier than the typical escape room, it sets a very high standard. We also made it through several sets of almost fake endings--suspect most groups will be able to escape in the nick of time :D

Palace of Fine Arts Theatre

Designed to look like a Roman ruin, this golden building is certainly a beauty to behold.

Reviewed By Bad_Seed4 - Canberra, Australia

I did not know about this place, my hotel was in the area and we were having an evening stroll and came across it and its the place for your IG or family shots While we were there in the twilight, there was a group taking wedding photos and another group all dressed u in their finery taking family shots. Evening is a good time because its less crowded, I can imagine taking photos would be trickier in the daytime because of more people. Its just beautiful. Its a lovely place to wander and take in the architecture and sit and contemplate (and take photos!)
