La Cite de L'Huitre

Reviewed By hunterlilyr - Glasgow, United Kingdom

We only visited the museum as we had just come from a fabulous lunch at Le Cayenne, and it was hysterical. There was a very cheesy (and slightly tongue-in-cheek) video including a chef explaining how to prepare and eat oysters, which was thoroughly enjoyed. Besides this it was very interesting to learn about how oysters are cultivated and the history behind them and the area, definitely entertaining! Spent about an hour in the museum, and it was worth it.

Fort Louvois

Fort Louvois is a 17th century coastal fort built on a submerged rock between Oléron Island and the Marennes Basin. It was built from 1691 to 1694 according to the plans drawn up by Vauban. It was design to protect the southern approach to the Charente estuary by catching enemy ships in a crossfire with the citadel at Oléron. This prevented an enemy from sailing up the river to attack the naval dockyards at Rochefort. Today, Fort Louvois is open to the public offering a unique and fascinating visit!
