We stayed in the area for a few days and this place was recommended to us by our hotel.
Using our Karnten Card we got free admission and then took our time taking in all the sights and the wonderful engineering of the roads, tunnels and if course the dam itself.
A truly wonderful place to visit in rain or Sunshine.

Porsche Automuseum

Reviewed By Hendrik_NL - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Despite the fact that Ferdinand Porsche sr. did most of his work under the nazi cloud and that he clearly was inspired (to say in the least) by the ideas of automobile engineers whose names are long forgotten, it is undeniable that he was one of the greatest automotive engineers of the 20th century. Porsche buffs go automatically to the grandiose Porsche museum in Stuttgart, but it is appropriate that in Gmünd, Carinthia, this private Porsche museum has been founded, because Gmünd is the place were the very first Porsches were built. In this museum some early and rare Porsches can be admired. Porsche is now a grand name in the automotive industry, not only producing cutting edge sports cars, but also the Porsche and Piëch families own the majority of the Volkswagen conglomerate. But here in Gmünd in this small private museum you can taste the humble beginnings. Entrance for a fee, free entrance with the Kärnten Card.

Malta High Alpine Road

Reviewed By George H - Mechelen, Belgium

Whether you're a keen driver or just want to admire the stunning Alpine views, you'll love the Malta Alpine Road. There's a small toll (per passenger) and off you go. The higher you climb, well it just gets better and better. Spectacular scenery, twisting roads, ancient tunnels, and we stopped off at several spots along the road for photographs, including hiking trails past many spectacular Waterfalls. The adventure continues at the top of the trail where you can cross the vast Kölnbrein Damn. There is literally something for everyone here. Allow at least half a day to enjoy this visit properly.

Alte Burg

Reviewed By Hendrik_NL - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

After our visit to the restaurant there we explored the rest of the "Alte Burg" but were not impressed. It was claimed that the "Alte Burg was used frequently for theater events, but our impression was one of gloom, dust, overdue maintenance and dilapidated furniture strewn around. Only one part of the building seemed to be used more frequently. A visit of the "Alte Burg" is worth the climb for the view, the restaurant and exploring the nooks and passages of the building, but not more than that.

Stadtturmgalerie

Reviewed By Hendrik_NL - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

This museum is located inside the medieval "Stadtturm" (City Gate) over several floors. These floors are to be reached by staircases only. It is an art museum, with variable themes and artists. When we visited the museum the theme was the work of Albrecht Dürer. Two floors were dedicated to reproductions of Dürer's work, where the copperplate work and the fineness of the lines were astonishing. My favorite was the copperplate of Erasmus. The upper floor was dedicated to originals of Dürer. A very rewarding visit. An entrance fee is levied at the front office. Entrance is free with the Kärnten Card.

Stadtpfarrkirche Maria Himmelfahrt

The Stadtpfarrkirche Mariä Himmelfahrt (Parish Church) is situated in the heart of the medieval center of charming Gmünd. The Parish Church has been built in the 14th century and has been added to and altered over the centuries. Step into the church and admire the altar, pulpit and decorations of the church. I like to direct special attention to the wood carvings. To be recommended.

Osnabrucker Hutte

Reviewed By MXchen - Germany

Stadtplatz

Reviewed By Hendrik_NL - Rotterdam, The Netherlands

Between the "Oberne Turm" (Upper Gate) and the "Stadtturm" (City Gate) in Gmünd, the wide Hauptplatz is situated, the medieval heart of Gmünd. The Hauptplatz is lined with buildings dating back from the Middle ages, and serve now as shops, hotels and restaurants. Don't worry, the character of the buildings have been preserved. When the weather is clement, a good time can be had on one of the outside areas of a hotel or restaurant.
