Maldon Railway Station

Reviewed By Victorianlad - Melbourne, Australia

The great news is that as of November 2020, heritage steam trains are set to again begin running on the Castlemaine - Maldon line after a disastrous period during which Victoria/Melbourne or both have been in lockdown (shocking state government). Visiting recently on a weekday, the railway station was in pristine condition even though it was wet. Diesel loco Y159 ran a mixed train transferring passenger cars and goods wagons to Maldon. This was unexpected and a bonus. This is a terrific volunteer run organisation so please support it when trains shortly return after their prolonged absence.

Maldon Market

The Maldon Market is a monthly farmers and makers market that brings together the very best hand made products and local produce from independent designers, artisans, craftspeople, gourmet food makers, growers and farmers.

After an early morning mountain bike ride from Maldon, down to Castlemaine and return, we couldn't wait to get to the Farmers Market to fill up our hungry tummies with steamed dim sims and dumplings from the Tastes of the Orient tent at the farmers market. Sooo delicious! We sat and enjoyed them while listening to beautiful acoustic guitar music from a young man with a gorgeous deep voice singing a good variety of upbeat and also melancholic songs in the rotunda. Enjoyed coffee, truffles, bought some sour dough bread and some herb seedlings. Chatted to the friendly walnut grower and the lovely Harcourt honey lady. Wandered through the shops of Maldon. Cute day out. Real treat.

Mount Tarrengower Lookout

We look a walk up Mt Tarrengower to see the sun set on the first day of the year. It was a solid walk and we were glad we had proper shoes. We had champagne, snacks and a lovely 360 degree view from the second level of the tower. Fortunately no fires in the vicinity. Great to meet and chat with the Fire Spotter who has held that position for over 20 years.
