What to do and see in Majorca, Balearic Islands: The Best Free Things to do

February 19, 2022 Venice Greaves

The dreamy island that provided inspiration to Chopin and Miró now has a reputation as a spring break beach destination. Don't worry, though, if you're vacationing over elementary school spring break-- there's plenty for the younger crowd. Marineland's dolphin and sea lion shows and children's beach attract families. And if you have a Thomas-obsessed toddler, the antique train that travels between Palma and Soller is a must-see.

Majorka was for me very underestimate destination - I thought that this island is only for beach loafers. That was really big mistake! This was our second trip only on foot and I can recommend it to everyone who is not beginner and who has some experiences. We went from Sant Elm to Soller (+- 85 km), track was hard because of bad rainy weather, so it was dangerous - dry stones changed to wet and every step was like going on soap floor. There was no chance how to finished GR221, even bus from Lluc was stopped because of wheater. So we moved to San Picaford (eastern coast) and there we started GR 222, which is no less beautiful and wheater there was better (+- 55 km). People there are pleasant, nature very very beautiful, food excellent, accommodation very various in comfort and also prices, we tried everything from sleeping outside to 4* superb hotel - each way was magnificent. Thumbs up for Majorka :)

This is the northernmost of the. Unfortunately to the very top were the lighthouse is you can only get by car yourself, no excursion busses are going there. In high season it is very busy there and very difficult to find a parking spot, so then you'd better try very early in the morning or before high season or you just go with an excursion and see it from further away and have a nice day and enjoy "being served"

I love this area. It is absolutely stunning. There are two beaches of beautiful whitish sand. It's very hot here as it is surrounded by trees and rocks. The sea is beautifully clear. It's worth a day out here. You can go by car " Hire one for the day" or if you are lucky enough to stay in Cala Dor there is a boat trip from Cala Gran beach which you should be able to book through your hotel. It's a good day out.

Playa de Muro Beach

I went to Playa de Muro Beach looking for a calm beach with fine sand for my 2 year old to play. This beach is really perfect for this. It has nice fine sand, calm sea, life guards and umbrellas rental. There are no restaurants on the beach, but you will find many options to eat (restaurants and markets) 1 block away. If you want to rent an umbrella (& lounges) I recommend going to the beach early in order to do so. The umbrella will be reserved for you the entire day, so you can go back to your hotel and return later. There is also a safe on the umbrella! So dont be afraid of leaving your values while you go for a swim. The sea is clean and very calm. You will see small fishes swimming around your feet. Just wonderfull!

Formentor Lighthouse

Great road bike ride with beautiful scenery along the way. 2 really good climbs along the way. During the day, auto traffic is restricted from the entrance to the park road. However, auto traffic from Porte de Pollenca to the parking lot at the entrance can be quite busy. Steep roads and hairpin turns become a bit dangerous with tour busses and cars competing for position. Avoid this ride from late morning to mid afternoon, and particularly on weekends, as the traffic is tremendous. Once you are actually in the park, the only traffic is the tour busses which generally give you a wide berth. Be sure to stop at the lighthouse at the end and have a coffee and ensemada pastry!
