Chateau d'Angers

The apparent austerity of this shale and limestone fortress, which the young king Louis IX had built on the edge of his kingdom in the 13th century, contrasts with the tranquil grounds inside the castle walls and the pleasant residence of the Dukes of Anjou, composed of buildings constructed at the end of the Gothic era. To transform and embellish the castle into a more welcoming home for the Anjou court, terraces and gardens were laid out, galleries built and the gateway erected. The star attraction within the walls of the Château d’Angers is the Tapestry of the Apocalypse or woven in 1375. With its 104 metres in length, it is the largest medieval tapestry anywhere in the world. Open: > 2nd May to 4th September: from 9.30 a.m. to 6.30 p.m. > 5th September to 30th April: from 10 a.m. to 5.30 p.m. Last admission 45 minutes before closing time. Closed: > 1st January, 1st May and 25th December.

Whilst we had heard of the well known Bayeux tapestry it came as a complete surprise to discover the much larger Apocalypse Tapestry of Angers. Commissioned by Louis 1 Duke of Anjou in 1375 it is some 100 metres long and depicts scenes from the book of Revelations. It is housed within the Castle that itself is impressive and awe inspiring along with stunning gardens. It is a must visit if you are in the area.

Museé Lurçat is a wonderful museum of tapestries located in Angers, a town in Loire Region, in the North part of France. The museum has only a big room, where there are a lot of fantastic Contemporanean tapestries. Really, they are different to classical ones. So, you can see great compositions in (almost) all of them. I walked around the room two times, really I was awesome and I do not like very much tapestries, I prefer other kinds of art. A top in the city! and probably a number one museum of tapestries manufactured in 20th Century!

A lovely chateau to visit, with beautiful grounds. Well worth it. We were able to walk around the open parts of the chateau, whilst reading a written guide in English. The grounds were very well kept and it was extremely peaceful during our visit. A lovely place for a long or short walk.

Terra Botanica

Spent 6 hours exploring this park and covered most of it. The range of plants was impressive and loads were in flower which meant glorious colours. My friend and I are both keen gardeners so this was a delight. There are a lot of games areas, playgrounds and puzzles dotted around so younger children would have lots to do. The pedal boats and the dinosaur 4D film are fun for all ages, as is the balloon ride. I loved the butterfly house and the orchids were spectacular too. Lunch was good value and very tasty although on a crowded day I think the queue would probably be very long. Probably better to bring your own and use one of the picnic areas.

Parc Oriental de Maulevrier

Visited this garden on recommendation of our hosts in nearby gite (see separate review La Cachette), on a Sunday morning in June 2018.Fantastic weather helped. What a very pleasant surprise. Wonderful walk round the ornate gardens, extensive lake with “cloud trees” all around. There is a restaurant/coffee shop where we had salmon bruchetta which was excellant. At the side is a small shop and on the other side of the coffee shop is a further shop selling plants and Bonsai trees of all sizes and prices. My wife was in a wheelchair and whilst some of the path is uphill, it wasn’t too steep that we couln’t get round. There is a separate section of bamboo garden with well established plants. I believe we went at the right time, just after it opened, as there were more people coming into the park as we were leaving. Highly recommended if you are in the area (even worth an hour drive). We will visit again on a future trip.

Pierre et Lumiere

Unique in its kind, Pierre et Lumière is an underground route where you can admire impressive sculptures representing the monuments and heritage of the Loire Valley. Hundreds of tons of stone were cut, cut and chiselled to the smallest detail. Nearly 3 years of work have been required to realize the sumptuous sculptures of castles, towns, villages and churches of our region, often carried out in low relief from the rock. A subtle luminous staging reveals the beauty of volumes and details. Lighting evolves, turns, changes colour to sublime every facet of the work. At the end of the visit, an unforgettable experience for children! A tuffeau stone, tools and wise advice. Here they are ready to create a memory that will remain etched in the stone and in their hearts.

Galerie David d'Angers

The former Toussaint abbey church, dating from the 13th century, was restored in 1984. It is now covered with a glass roof, an audacious feature of modern architecture, and houses the works of sculptor, Pierre-Jean David, known as David d’Angers (1788-1856). David d’Angers’ work is scattered throughout France and Europe. Therefore, the main interest of the gallery in Angers is that it showcases the quasi-totality of his sculptures as plaster models, the preparatory studies for the final work, the latter being cast in bronze or sculpted in marble and stone. An idyllic promenade where the light reveals the beauty of the sculptures!
