We visited Chiang Mai over a weekend and decided to add this tour to our agenda since it offered a half day trip. SO glad we did! They are running a good program and are caring for the elephants well. Our host was very knowledgable, witty, and very available for questions when he wasn't presenting. Feeding the elephants was a highlight even though I was initially intimidated by their size. I chose not to "mud" with the elephants and still felt I got my money's worth. Afterwards we enjoyed some leisurely time by the pool and they end the tour with a great little perk...a group cooking class for their local Thai noodle soup Khao Soi - it was delish!

We were keen not to go to an elephant attraction that involved elephants performing or rides. This place is not perfect in that the elephants are encouraged to bathe to order and one lifted people for photos. However, the elephants have been taken from zoo, private owners and work and seem well-cared for if a little bored. They did have time to feed in the forest as well as be fed by us. The guide spoke good English and made us feel welcome and included. The small children who were there had a good time. It was great to feed, bathe and walk with the elephants. The visit lasted about 2.5 hours and included vegetarian pad Thai and drinks. Our driver was also well looked after while waiting. The cost was 1500 baht per person. I thought that the dressing in “local” clothes was silly but actually it was good to be able to change back into my own clean clothes at the end. Recommend taking fresh underwear with as I got very wet and muddy in the pool.

We took a yellow songthaew from Warorot market at 40 Thai Baht per person to the botanic garden. The journey took about an hour. Entrance fee is free for senior over 60s. We were recommended to take a tram to the garden as it was quite a walk. The tram was 30 baht per person. The first stop was at the canopy. It was a very impressive walkway with fantastic views. The driver then took us to the glasshouse gardens. This was divided into different sections with alpine plants, orchids, cactus and rain forest. Particularly impressive was the large rain forest glass house with a massive waterfall. We meant to visit the natural science museum but we ran out of time. We will do it on our next visit. Highly recommend.

The Siam Insect-Zoo & Museum is a great place for famlies visiting Chiang Mai. The facility was renovated in 2010 and includes exhibits with insects ranging from caterpillars to beetles to butterflies.

I traveled alone to the Siam Insect Zoo by taxi from Chiang Mai because Hubby wasn't interested in looking at insect displays. I'm so glad I did. This was incredibly interesting, besides being the only insect zoo I've ever heard of, anywhere in the world. The owner of the B&B we stayed at in Chiang Mai told me that the insect zoo was established by a man who'd contracted malaria from a mosquito bite in his youth, which caused him to start researching mosquitos, and then other insects as well. The collection of preserved insects is astonishing - three rooms full of wall-to-wall and floor to ceiling displays, including thousands of insects from all over the world, along with a wealth of information about each creature. I was delighted to enter the butterfly garden, where beautiful specimens were flitting from flower to flower. They weren't afraid to get close to me, and a few nearly landed on me. There's a spider room with live specimens of gargantuan spiders, many poisonous, all confined in aquariums. If the staff would clean the glass, they'd be much easier to watch and visitors would be able to take photos. There's also a display with aquariums containing many species of large "walking stick" insects. You can hold one, if you're willing. Again the glass really needs cleaning. One aquarium contains one of the most poisonous insects on the planet - a giant red centipede. You can't hold this 12-inch long monster because his bite can kill a child or someone in frail health. I was fascinated watching a huge night-slayer scorpion, bearded dragons, beautiful iguanas, and a couple of turtles for good measure. Admission is only about $4 USD. I spent more than an hour checking out the displays. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Don't miss this museum if you're traveling anywhere near Mae Rim.

I loved everything about this park. What an incredibly brilliant, planet-friendly brainchild. Thailand is revolutionizing the paper-making process, and the rest of the world should pay close attention. Adult admission is only $3.25 USD. The park is gorgeous, with a jungle feel to it, yet clean and new and beautifully maintained. Guests are directed along jungle paths to several thatched hut structures, where each phase of the paper making process is explained by a tour guide. Educational signage throughout the park provides additional detail about the process. I was surprised that the guide spoke English, with an occasional explanation in Thai for the children in the group. Everyone in the tour group got to make a sheet of paper from a ball of fiber. After this part of the tour, we went to a large covered pavilion, where we could participate in Do-It-Yourself projects involving PooPaper. You can make a bookmark, or a fan, a journal, a greeting card, bead jewelry ... all manner of interesting craft projects were going on in this section. You pay for the materials, and one of the staff will help if you need assistance. The gift shop shelves are lined with gorgeous paper products made on site. You can buy invitations or notepads, eco-friendly bags, T-shirts, pencils made from twigs, even a poopoo paper Christmas ornament. The items make lovely gifts or souvenirs, and prices are reasonable The park also has a cute cafe and outdoor picnic area on site. Adobe Cafe sells PooPoochip cookies (yum), as well as cupcakes, pies, cakes, water and soft drinks, coffee and tea, yogurt smoothies and fruit shakes. Prices are again reasonable. The park is located about a 20-minute drive out of town, in fairly close proximity to several other attractions. I hired a taxi driver for only $20 USD round-trip to drive me to several locations and wait while I spent the day touring various sites.

Accidentally bumped into this hidden gems garden and tea house in the middle of nowhere while traveling to a Buddhist temple in the area. I must say it was a pleasant surprise to see such a beautiful garden with Erotic art pieces decorated within the garden. As a art lover myself it was great to see how everything were carefully thought out how each piece would fit in the landscape design. As a world traveler I honestly can say I have not seen it anywhere and it's great to see this place in Thailand where it's quite difficult to find modern art venues. If you are art lovers or garden lovers you would not want to miss out the opportunity to check out this place. The owner; Khun Tai is super friendly and enthusiastic to elaborate each design aspect of the garden and explain the concepts of each art pieces. She was part of making the visit a memorable experience as there's a lot of thoughts put in the design of the place. It's also a perfect venue if you want to use this place for a small group gatherings or small party among art lovers .
