What to do and see in Lynchburg, United States: The Best Places and Tips

October 12, 2017 Elouise Mccaul

Lynchburg is a city in the south-central region of the U.S. state of Tennessee. It is governed by a consolidated city-county government unit whose boundaries coincide with those of Moore County. Lynchburg is best known as the location of Jack Daniel's, whose famous Tennessee whiskey is marketed worldwide as the product of a city with only one traffic light. Despite the operational distillery, which is a major tourist attraction, Lynchburg's home county of Moore is a dry county. The population was 6,362 at the 2010 census.

Tour was fabulous - the place hasn't changed a whole lot from last time we visited, maybe a little more upscale parking, lots more crowds, but the guides are just as funny and equally as informative. Beautiful grounds, lovely smells and the tasting was spot on! Think I'll be drinking more whiskey!

We came out to visit the Distillery and found them on a whim. Such a great story and history. Moreover, the attention to detail and quality really does set them apart from other companies. Mr. Thomas was an amazing host that showed his operation. So much fun. I️ recommend stopping by if you are in the neighborhood.

Almost everything is Jack Daniel's souvenirs: hats, shirts, toys, etc. I bought a GooGoo chocolate. Yummy. Stop in if you are in the area and see some interesting hand made wooden barrel items.

Although I have visited downtown Lynchburg many times, this was my first visit to the Old Jail Museum. They only request you make a one dollar donation to tour the museum. The jail contained a lot of history about the jail, a nearby funeral home (now closed) and other local items of historical interest. Without spoiling your tour, I will tell you that I was very surprised with all aspects of the jail cells. Although this is a self-guided tour, there is a hostess on-site who was delightful. Make sure you take time to see this small town treasure.

Nina's Taste of Tennessee

If you want to taste some really good local made candy, this place is a must visit! We frequent this candy shop when in town. Nina makes the candy in the back kitchen of the store! I especially like the chocolate covered cherries "with spirits", peanut butter fudge and chocolate covered caramels (the caramel is soft and creamy)! I know if my husband brings me home a box of Nina's candy that it is a very special gift! :). They also have locally made crafts and I have purchased items for both myself and gifts for others. This family owned business has a friendly and helpful staff! Enjoy!

Moore County Courthouse

Built in 1885, the courthouse and jail has never been over crowded

Reviewed By Paul G - Tucson, Arizona

This gorgeous and historic building sits in the middle of the square and dominates all that it surveys.

It is still a functioning Court House and as such still plays a very important role in the life of Lynchburg. It is closed on Thursdays, however, if you are there at that time make sure that you walk around and read about the history.

This building has been here many, many years and is glorious, both in it's design and it's function. I wish it many more wonderful years.
