Pamulaklakin Forest Trail

Reviewed By MarianaV111 - New York City, United States

I wanted to do a jungle training and saw there were 2 possibilities in Subic: JEST or Pamulaklakin. The first one sounded more commercial so I decided to go for the latter and what a incredible time I had. The Pamulaklakin trail is on Aeta land, an indigenous tribe that lives in the hills. I was by myself and decided to book an overnight stay as well. They provided the tent. My guide, MinMin, picked me up at the trailhead and we started hiking up. He is small (like most of the tribe, but incredibly fast and very knowledgeable. He is proficient in English and knows all the plants and animals. The Aeta are a tribe of @ 500 families. Their village has a school and MinMin works on the family farm. He taught me how to make fire, use a machete, make a trap etc. He also cooked me a meal and set up my tent Then ... we went to visit some of his family. Marilyn, who is the person I had phone contact with and with whom I confirmed my arrival, is incredible! Smart as a whip and very hospitable. Let's just say we ended up singing karaoke at her place later that evening. Incredibly warm people and I truly recommend this experience

Marlboro Hill

Reviewed By mikagoes - Bacolod, Philippines

We climbed this trail for the sunrise and the blue-soiled hills. Overall it was an easy to moderate hike. The toughest part was the beginning which is mostly incline, after the sunrise view point, it's 70% flat or downhill. It can get chilly before dawn, especially when the fog starts to go down. There are food and drinks stalls at certain spots along the trail so if you forget to bring water, you should be able to buy a bottle. Best to come on a weekday (less crowds) and enjoy the quiet serenity of walking through the mountain. Can be finished in 2 - 4 hours depending on your walking speed and if the trail is wet or not.

Mt. Gulugod Baboy Trail

Reviewed By HerbalTurtle - San Diego, United States

Took this hike right before sunset, didnt quite reach the top, decided to descend due to darkness coming, made it roughly 75% of the way in about 1 1/2 hours. Its a steep trail that is paved 50% up, then non marked trail the rest of the way, dont worry about being amongst locals houses, some are sari saris, selling goods to help you along the way and the rest being friendly faces willing to point you in the right direction if youre unsure where to head. Take your time, breaks a plenty with views to enjoy, and watch your step. You will probably encounter chickens, goats, dogs, and cows on your journey, be friendly and quick and they will leave you be. If youre tired from walking up, there is a way to drive back down, normally by hiring a trike. Beautiful views that should be experienced by all. If you feel up for a workout i strongly suggest taking advantage of this hike. Yes there is trash, it could be cleaner, but try not to let it diminish your experience.

Mount Makiling

Reviewed By pcjce07 - Los Banos, Philippines

I've been living in the area for around 13 years, and it was on my 6th year that I get to enjoy birding here, when I learned basic photography. I can share with you several birding spots, not usually visited by visiting birders. I learned about these just a year ago as well. Early morning walks before going to the office get me more acquainted of the bird species in the area. Mt. Makiling is a great birding site with a lot of endemic birds to see! It's just an hour away from Metro Manila.
