This is such a great park and museum! They also have tours that you can go on and learn more about the park. I didn't go on the tour because I didn't have time, but they are reasonably priced and have a lot to offer. I had my dogs with me and it was such a nice walk, we sure enjoyed it. I also visited the gift shop and bought some gold panning equipment. The store is so cute and has such great selection of historical and educational items. The woman at the register was so nice and helpful. She had suggestions on where to go and was a wealth of information. I would love to come here again and take the tour.

Whitewater Excitement

Reviewed By GoDaddy99 - Cheltenham, United Kingdom

Booked online before leaving the UK. Seemed to be one of the more competitively priced. Certainly worth every penny.

We did the lower section of the South Fork, The Gorge. Perfect for first timers. Exciting enough to be fun yet still safe. We are two adults plus kids aged 13 & 16 but there was another family in the same boat with a small child, looked aged 6 or so. No one fell out, unintentionally.

Food was basic but plentiful. Fine for vegetarians as we are.

Seemed to be a well organised and professional outfit.

I recommend.

South Fork of the American River

This river is one of the most popular whitewater rafting and kayaking destinations in California.

Reviewed By coolme_kiran - Bangalore

The rapids in the Lower Gorges - South Fork of American River are amazing. These are totally beginner friendly (Class 3+) and rafting through them is great fun.

My personal favorite was Satan's Cesspool. Rafting in these waters is a truly amazing and memorable experience. Everyone should try this atleast once in their life - a great adventure activity and makes you respect the wild waters.

If you are a beginner, I would suggest you try South Fork first and then move onto other high thrill rapids (Class 4 and all) at Middle Fork and North Fork.

After this year's incredible snowfall, I wanted to take advantage of what was bound to be incredible rafting on the American River, and convinced a friend to join me. I wanted to get in a couple of days of rafting with some challenging, high action adventure. We elected to do a two day North Fork/South Fork combo trip, and were not disappointed.

We rafted the North Fork the first day, and definitely got an adventure. We had an action packed day, guided by Jeremiah and James. The North Fork is challenging, and definitely not for a beginning rafter. I think everyone in our raft ended up spending some time in the water at some point, and we were all exhausted by the end of the day. But I think we all really loved the experience, and were incredibly impressed by the skill and nature of both Jeremiah and James. None of us doubted that we were in good hands, even when things were challenging.

We rafted the South Fork on the second day, which made for a much easier (but no less fun) day. The South Fork also had a higher than usual flow for this time of year, and it was much more quick moving (and the rapids more fun) than I recall from rafting the same section in prior years.

We also booked camping through Adventure Connection. They recently purchased Mariah campground, which is a lovely riverside camping area. If you are tent camping, you select where to camp when you arrive. My friend and I arrived about 8pm on Friday night and there were still lots of great options. The tent camping area is divided up by natural features, and we were delighted to find a small area that was divided from our neighbors by some trees, providing a little bit of privacy. The campground also has a couple of tent cabins and some other options if staying in a tent is not your thing.

Overall, I would definitely recommend Adventure Connection for both rafting and camping. Every guide we worked with was incredible and obviously knew their stuff. And, after seeing how rafting (particularly on the more challenging North Fork) has the potential to be dangerous, I am really glad that we booked with Adventure Connection and had guides who were so reliable and caring.

As a family ranging in age from 9 to 45 with little or no previous rafting experience, we felt assured by the safety briefing and confident that our instructor Lori was capable of looking after everyone throughout the trip. The rafting itself was the highlight of our US road trip. Very exciting and enjoyable experience in the most beautiful of surroundings. I'd do it again in a heartbeat.
