Maybe it was the misty, cold weather. Maybe it was the moss on the stones. Maybe it was the fact that we chose to hike the CCC Crossover Trail first. Either way, it all came together into one perfect moment that made us absolutely fall in love with this park. We started our morning on the CCC Crossover Trail and immediately felt like we were back in Ireland, scrambling over castle ruins. It was cold and grey that morning and the greens of the moss and trees were so vibrant. We were hooked. We met up with a small group of friends an hour or so later and hiked the rest of the park. The trails are really great, nothing too difficult at all. Part of the Pine Gulch Trail has been affected by previous fires so the scenery changes greatly there. However, it is wonderful to see the new pines growing in those areas! There is another section of that trail that is still old forest and it's wonderful to know the rest of the park will look like that again someday. The Winding Woodland Trail is lovely and a very easy stroll. Keep in mind that most areas of the trails are narrow and work best in single file if you're going with a group. We really loved it here and will definitely go back. The birds here were also AMAZING. The forest was filled with their songs.

On November 6, 2020 I found myself at Rising Phoenix Adventures in Bastrop, Texas trying to get my bicycle repaired so that I could continue my cross-country bicycle journey. I found out that Rising Phoenix does NOT offer bicycle repairs, but more importantly I found out that the owner, Jamie has a HEART OF GOLD!!! Jamie is an extremely kind and generous person who stopped what she was doing and personally drove me all the way to Austin, Texas so that my bicycle could be repaired that same day. Jamie even waited for the repairs to be completed and drove me back to Bastrop, Texas so that I could promptly continue my epic journey. This generous act of kindness was all done without any charge/fee to me. Jamie did it all out of the goodness of her heart! If your adventure group is treated even half as good as Jamie treated myself (a non-customer), then you will be very happy with your experience with Rising Phoenix Adventures and owner, Jamie!!!

A Large portion of the Bastrop State Park was destroyed by a devasting fire in September of 2011. The community along with the State and other organizations have been replanting the trees. Although it doesn't possess the same beauty it offers an interesting perspective in how a forest is regrown. There are still a number of areas that were not burned that you can see as well as a number of the Historic buildings. This park is listed in the National Historic Registry. There is RV and tent camping available. Bastrop State Park is located next to Buescher State Park and suffered very little damage. You can see the beauty of the Lost Pines, see what a fire can do to a forest and see the Lost Pines in their toddler stage of growth. Both Bastrop and Buescher State Parks are not far from the North and South shores of Lake Bastrop where you can enjoy a wonderful weekend at the Lake.

We've stayed here 3 times and each time the park looks better and better. It's been 10 years since the fire and lots of new growth. Nice hiking trails, easy for the kiddos Too! Bathrooms are immaculate, hosts do a great job keeping them clean. On weekends, the park provides programs too. They are rebuilding the dam now. We stayed in Piney Hill.
