What to do and see in Los Angeles, California (CA): The Best Cultural Tours

March 22, 2022 Agatha Simes

Hollywood beckons to tourists who long for a brush with Tinseltown glamor. Tour movie studios, slip your hands into the famous prints at the TCL Chinese Theatre, or indulge in a celeb sighting at one of LA’s white-hot nightspots. Spot your favorite star while shopping at The Grove, or forget all about the famous eye candy as you take in the iconic artwork at The Getty Center. For a different type of star-gazing, peek through the telescopes at the Griffith Observatory.

We opted for a 3 hr private tour for our family of 4 + a toddler and it was a great decision! Kenneth was excellent in laying out all our options for a private tour and getting us quickly booked and set up to go. Darnell was a gracious host and showed us what we wanted to see while teaching us about this city. Great job!! Excellent customer service all around.

On our Hollywood tour we go back in time to when the name first appeared on maps in the 1880’s, then we’ll tell you how and why the start-up movie industry first moved to this small farming town in the early twentieth century. By walking the streets of Hollywood you’ll get the chance to discover the many hidden historic sites in the area (such as the oldest house in Hollywood, where Charlie Chaplin’s kids went to school), as well offering you the best up close and personal experiences of such icons as the Walk of Fame, the Capitol Records Building, the Egyptian Theater, the Dolby Theater (the home of the Oscars) and the TCL Chinese Theater where your Hollywood tour ends, in the perfect place to get lunch or get some great shots of the Hollywood Sign for Instagram. * Tour starts at 10am daily * Children under 12 y.o. gain free entry

I really enjoyed my tour with Damien. I've lived in Los Angeles for a long time but did not know a lot of the history of the city and Damien explained the background of how LA became LA. Stunning views of Los Angeles, from downtown to Santa Monica. Free parking at the Greek Theatre parking lot (when there aren't any events). Bring water (they do give you a bottle), hat, sunscreen. I was lucky and the day was overcast but it can get really hot there. Uphill walk for about 20 minutes so if you're not in shape, this is not the tour for you. Then the rest is pretty easy. Due to COVID, the Griffith Observatory is closed right now so you can't go inside. Good tour for locals (especially if you're not familiar with Griffith Park) and tourists.

Take this fascinating self-guided GPS audio tour of LA’s most famous boulevard and learn the crazy stories behind the legends that made the Sunset Strip what it is today. For 80 years the Sunset Strip has sparked the culture of America with behaviors that have now become normal, like dancing to rock music, gambling at casinos, smoking Marijuana and same sex marriage. And while the heat that the Strip generated from its nightlife sparks have spread out across the entire country, the sources of those sparks – the original ignition points that heated the action on the Sunset Strip – all came from gambling. This tour takes you through the Strip's transformation. The tour is ready whenever you are and the audio plays automatically at exactly the right time and place using your smartphone's GPS and the VoiceMap mobile app, which also works offline.

This was the highlight of our short 4 day stay in Santa Monica. We definitely enjoyed walking to the Pier and surrounding areas daily, but we wanted to see the highlights of LA as well. Eight people on our party booked this tour and we couldn’t have been more happy that we did! We covered so much ground in a short period of time. Sure, we wanted to hang out on Rodeo Drive a little longer or stroll Hollywood Blvd more, but it’s a way to experience many places in about 8 hours. Alecia was knowledgeable, kind, professional & hilarious!! We enjoyed the other parties on the bus as well. This is a plus since you never know who’s gonna be on a tour with you. We saw our tour “friends” later at dinner and we were very cordial and chatted a bit more. My son was celebrating his 13th birthday (purpose of our Cali visit). When Alecia found out, she led the bus in singing Happy Birthday to him. She always played a song for him before dropping us off at our hotel. Talk about making the tour extra special! She even remembered my brother’s name. Maybe not a big deal to some, but it was to us. Alecia gave detailed and easy to follow directions each time before we explored a new area (where she’d be, how to remember where to meet up, public restrooms &WiFi, what to do if we encountered a celebrity). Santa Monica Pier, Venice Beach, Beverly Hills (Rodeo Drive), Farmer’s Market Griffith Observatory, Hollywood, and more! The bus was very nice! Clean, air conditioned and phone/device charging capabilities!! Thank you, Alecia!!!

The Skyline, and Skyline Twilight tour visits the more modern gathering spaces of DTLA. Staples Center and L.A. Live, the home of the Lakers, Figueroa and 7th Street home of the tallest skyscrapers on the west coast, and several shopping destinations, as well as Grand Avenue's museums and performing arts venues are all new additions to the downtown skyline. We stop in Little Tokyo for an off bike break. We offer this tour day and night, with lighted bicycles and reflective safety vests. It is a thrill to cruise L.A. streets at night. Most of this route takes place in designated bike lanes. We design our small group, Downtown Los Angeles bike tours for casual riders. Our formula of flat, easy, 2.5 hour tours is perfect for novice and regular cyclists alike. All tours feature an off bike break for you to explore on your own or grab a snack. Experience Los Angeles like a local on the back of a bike. We are the only tour company that offers evening city tours.

Inclusions: Use of bicycle, helmets, safety vest and lights

Exclusions: Little Tokyo has many snack options, guests may want to try on their own.

First off, rest assured that this is an easy bike ride. I was worried about biking downtown, but it was very do-able, even for my MIL, who is pretty new to biking. The tour itself was phenomenal. I came into it knowing nothing about LA’s art district, and I learned a ton. Jennifer not only knows about the art you’ll be seeing, she knows many of the crews and artists, as well as the history of the district. It truly felt like a docent tour. And, because the art changes pretty frequently, you could repeat the tour in a few months and see all new art.
