We decided to see more incredible flower fields so we took a 35 minute train ride from The Hague to Hillegom. As we approached Hillegom on the train the fields were spectacular vivid colors of orange, yellow, purple, and reds. There was a small sign pointing to Hillegom Center. We walked over 1 km but never found the town center, nor did we find bicycles to rent or any information how to best explore the vast distances by foot. I checked Uber and in 3 minutes a wonderful driver Goran picked us up. He spoke perfect English, is delightful and he drove us around to the amazingly beautiful tulip fields stopping everywhere. We made many stops, got out of the car to absorb the magic and took dozens of photos. Absolutely had a great 50 minute “tour” with Goran. He then dropped us off back to the train station and then we visited lovely Leiden.

Museum de Zwarte Tulp

Well, it took me like two hours to get there: from Amsterdam Centraal to the Leyden railway station and from there a bus that drove for about 40 minutes before it left me in Lisse. Once there, I had to wait for the Museum to open. The museum was interesting. The highlight there, in addition to a movie with the history of tulips, was a conversation I had with one of the curators who was surprised to have an Argentine there... He told me of Alexandre Dumas' The Black Tulip and the inspiration inherent in searching for a black tulip (he said that black is in fact the absence of color so a black tulip was impossible...) and emphasized that what is important is the journey not so much as getting to the destination... Hopefully other tourists will have a more attuned sense of orientation than I had because I got lost looking for the bus stop to go back to Leyden and I sort of panicked. It took me a while to find it. Mind you, Lisse is in the middle of plots of land used for growing tulips and in August the land was ¿fallow? When I finally found my way back to Amsterdam Centraal, I was so relieved that I ¡lost my cell phone! I had to buy a new one... Not without reporting the loss at the Lost Property Office in Amsterdam Centraal and then filing a report with the railway station police. IT WAS AN AMAZING EXPERIENCE.
