What to do and see in Limburg Province, The Netherlands: The Best Specialty Museums

March 25, 2022 Emerita Lamoureux

Getting its name from the medieval Duchy of Limburg (now split among Holland, Belgium and Germany and the birthplace of the infamously pungent Limburger cheese), Limburg is the Netherlands’ southernmost region. Many of the area’s best attractions are concentrated in the capital of Maastricht, but other sights include the 12th-century Valkenburg castle ruins, the 17th-century Eijsden castle, the 20th-century Glaspaleis (built next to a medieval church at Heerlen), and De Meinweg National Park.

Eynderhoof Limburgs Openluchtmuseum

Derlon Museum Cellar

Reviewed By SuperCubs - The Netherlands, null

We heard about Roman ruins in Maastricht and began researching the history of the city. It's recommended you do the same before visiting. The Romans chose to build a road through Maastricht to Cologne and a fortress and temple along the West side of the river. The Derlon cellar includes sections of the road, an old well, artifacts found from the site, including parts of a statue. The site extends under more buildings in the neighborhood, this is the only spot we know if that you can see some of the original and reconstructions. The Derlon owner decided to preserve this site. You can visit for free on Sundays, 1200-1600. Other times you can make a reservation to eat with history.
