It lies at the end of the south-eastern branch of Lake Como (the branch named Lake of Lecco / Lago di Lecco). The Bergamo Alps rise to the north and east, cut through by the Valsassina of which Lecco marks the southern end.

While on a trip to Tuscany we decided to forgo our last 2 days there and head north to Lake Como. Best decision ever! Upon arriving, we checked hotel sites and found an apartment with a view of the lake, only steps from the restaurant in Varenna. The restaurants and shops are amazing, everywhere you look is a postcard. Just go!

The scenery was breath taking and the guide was knowledgeable. I am a novice and this was above my fitness level. However, with the guidance provided, I did finish the return up hill ride. Part way back, my legs gave out from fatigue and when I stopped to walk up hill, I fell over. I was not injured except for some scratches.

We did the tour at Lake Como first and thoroughly enjoyed tasting different foods as we toured the back streets and learned about the history. Magdelena, our Guide, was great and the restaurant at the end was fantastic. The next day we did a tour in Bellagio and our Guide Francisca was equally as good. We were running late due to a problem with the ferry boat and the tour operator was great about accommodating us being behind schedule, which we really appreciated. On the negative side, the Bellagio tour was advertised as having a Michelin Star restaurant at the end and to be honest the food was underwhelming. We were also told that they don't actually have a Michelin Star, they've just applied for one, and the advertising wasn't clear to us. I would highly recommend both tours, although I would also recommend clarifying the advertising on the Bellagio tour.
