Caldera de Bandama

Reviewed By Roadboy - London, United Kingdom

A highlight of our stay in Gran Canaria (where much of the landscape closer to the coast is, to be honest, ugly and ravaged); the 3.5km walk worked very well going clockwise, so ignore the sign to the Caldera itself (see warning in previous review) and follow the road toward Pico Bandama. Great views, and good exercise on the ups and downs. Important WARNING if coming by hourly bus 311 from Las Palmas: we (and a dozen or so other tourists) should have ignored the driver mischievously calling out 'Bandama'; unfortunately, we all got out at the village of Bandama, rather than the Caldera, and had 2km of road walk uphill to get to the start of the ridge walk. I suspect the local passengers on board have a good laugh about tourists' stupidity once the bus carries on to the Caldera without us.

Jardin Botanico Viera & Clavijo

This unique garden erected on the side of a ravine has examples of every kind of vegetation found on the Canaries.

Short bus ride from Las Palmas, the driver told us where to get off. We entered via the upper (free) entrance and made our way down steep paths towards the lower entrance. there is an amazing variety of plants, trees (including numerous Dragon trees) and cacti (over a third of the world's known cacti). The gardens are well maintained with clean toilets, a restaurant near the upper entrance and were peaceful, not many visitors in February. We would certainly go back if we visited Gran Canaria again.

Anything you want is probably here, there are many restaurants along the way and no cars so walking is easy and leisurely. Lots of local shops. Try cafe SOL for coffee. Nice service and presentation and a good energy boost along the way. Very fair prices.

Roque Nublo

We came here as part of a tour, so did not have to drive and park ourselves which was a bonus. We also benefitted from their expert knowledge to take warm clothes (but layer!), good shoes, water and we were given hiking sticks too, which really helped in some places. It was good to go early too, before it heated up, though it's often windy and therefore cool at the top. It's a pretty full on climb up - we definitely needed water stops - but so worth it up there.

Across the road from the commercial shopping area of Las Palmas, this compact town is full of historical buildings with beautiful architectures - Casa de Colon mansion, Santa Ana cathedral, town hall, museums and galleries. Meander around the cobbles streets then take a moment to absorb and enjoy the atmosphere in one of the plenty outdoor terraces.

The rock pools here were beautiful and so full of life; small crabs, lots of fish, sea urchins, anemones, shrimp and I even saw a sea cucumber. Definatly recommend if you even mildy interested in seeing life. You don't need to be an expert, or have any equipment, just a great place just to spend a few hours scouring and exploring the rocks and crevasse for little critters. Just make sure you get there near or at low tide and be aware the rocks are very very slippy. I fell in about 7 times and got a bit wet x) Also great place to take a water proof camera too. Will take a bit of practice and getting used to taking pictures of the critters P:
