What to do and see in Lahaina, Hawaii (HI): The Best Beaches

April 1, 2022 Christa Meece

Lahaina, the former Hawaiian capital, was the center of the global whaling trade, and its Historic District is a National Historic Landmark. Traditional Hawaiian luaus, surf lessons and tours on horseback are fun, but let’s be realistic—you wouldn’t be in Hawaii if you didn’t want to go to the beach. Try Ka’anapali Beach, one of Maui’s best.

Sunshine kissed, cool trade breezes, water sports galore and stunning beaches, what more could you ask for.... wait, it’s there too, a short walk to whalers village gets you shopping, dining and more. P.S. Macy’s in the Hyatt is perfect for resort wear and things forgotten for a trip.

Napili Beach

A friend and I rented snorkels and waded into the water to see what was around. There's a small natural reef about 30-50 yards in, and tons of marine life living on it -- brain coral, sea turtles, moorish idol fish, convict tang, needlefish, ornate wrasse, and more. This was the best snorkel experience I have had, and beat a lot of scuba dives that I have been on in terms of wildlife! If you stay on the shore side of the reef, there's barely any current. If you go beyond it, it's still not bad for experienced swimmers.

Kahekili Beach Park

We walked here from Honua Kai resort. There appears to be a good deal of parking. Nice open grass area, restrooms, wide sandy beach with sand entry. The reef starts about 30 feet from shore and is well preserved and well populated with fish. Several turtles to be seen under the water on the reef. Water depth at reef ranges from 8 feet to 25 feet with an average of about 15 feet. Trees border the beach and provide some shade. Outdoor shower with good water pressure to rinse off afterwards. Busy but not overcrowded.

Hanakao’o Beach Park is easy tto missif you are tearing along Hwy 30 from Kaanapali towards Lahaina. It’s one of the long skinny beach parks along the highway. But it’s worth the stop. Has life guards (not that common for Maui beaches), easy sandy entry, decent shade, tons of (free!) parking and better snorkeling than up at Black Rock. Also showers & changing rooms. What it doesn’t have is tons of people, jostling their way down the boardwalk in their designer duds. A plus in my book! Also no restaurants immediately nearby but BYO Picnic and then head into Lahaina -10 min. away - afterwards. The north end of the beach is home to an outrigger canoe club and the canoes are cool to see. You can also watch the parasailing and jet skiers offshore. The sandy bottomed area of the beach is large enough that you can swim and play in the waves, only having to watch out for the occasional rock, but enter the water and swim down to your left for some EXCELLENT snorkeling. Lots of fish and many turtles. Saw octopus there too. Sundays are a treat here. Lots of local families and picnics. People just chillin’.

We have two kids, ages 7 and 11 and I wanted a beach where we could all relax and I didn't have to worry about large waves and undertow. This beach was PERFECT. The water is calm and warm and you can walk way out because of the gentle slope of the sand. I could actually relax and read my book while the kids snorkeled and played in the water. We saw a sea turtle and fish. There was shade and sun, and the sand was wonderful. This may be the best beach I've ever been to with our family. I laid in the water for a long time, which was the perfect temperature - it felt like a cool bath. Highly recommend.

This little beach park is perfect for kids of all ages. We have a 9 month old and 5 year old and they both had so much fun at this park! Not only is the water perfect for the little ones to splash in but there is also a playground! Be sure to get an acai bowl from the Farmer's market across the street to enjoy while there!
