This must be one of the most photographed spots in western France. As you drive by you cannot ignore the areas of brilliantly coloured poppies with the ruined abbey as a back drop. If you walk into the poppies it can be quite a psychedelic experience - takes you back...

Lovely market with a good range of yummy produce & welcoming atmosphere. We picked up some lovely bread, goat's cheese, saucisson & raspberries for a picnic on the beach and enjoyed chatting with the stall holders who were very kind & friendly and helped us practice our terrible French :)

Fort la Pree

This monument is the oldest fort on the island of Re. Built in 1626, it was primarily intended to ensure the sovereignty of King Louis XIII on the island, which at that time was a strategic territory for the crown facing the Protestants of La Rochelle. He had an important role during the siege of the island by the Duke of Buckingham in 1627. Featuring a small port inside its fortifications, he allowed the landing of the royal troops at night, which participated in the victory of the French troops resisting on the island. This site was threatened with destruction many times over the centuries, especially during the reign of Louis XIV with engineer Vauban. This man destroy the entire outer defensive system and construct buildings in line with the needs of the time. Fort Pree was forgotten at the end of the seventeenth century in favor of the Citadel of Saint Martin de Re, built between 1681 and 1684. During the next century, he played a secondary role fortress also served the landing of all travelers from the Mainland. At the end of the nineteenth century, its architecture is profoundly changed. The old buildings are experiencing many changes and even total destruction. The army then assigned to a small fort defense function of the newly constructed port Pallice. The army occupied the fort until the early years of the twentieth century. German troops occupied the fort during World War II and renamed it Bertha battery. He returned to the public domain in 1948, when a combination of the department of Eure bought it to turn it into a summer camp center. It was a summer camp for thirty years, then, in the early 80s, the monument was bought by its current owner the CNOSAP. The CNOSAP rehbilitated the fort, and had it classified as a historical monuments.

We spent two hours on Ile de Re but this was only a taster and we wish we could have had longer. We headed for La Flotte a pretty fishing village with its streets of little souvenir shops, lovely Italian ice cream shops, and beautiful harbour full of sailing vessels. The place had a lovely feel about it, quite classy but not expensive. Next time we will send a whole day touring around the whole island. The toll on the bridge from La Rochelle is 16 Euros to access the island with no toll on the way back.

My husband only likes dark chocolate. I bought him a bar of 99% chocolate, a bit worried that it would taste like baking chocolate. Not at all! It was smooth and not bitter, just very intensely chocolate. La Chocolatière is really an amazing place for chocolate lovers. Next to it is an outstanding ice-cream and crêpes stand with people of all ages waiting in the street to get their treats. I recommend the caramel beurre salé crêpes, a specialty from the region.

Les 2 Canons

Reviewed By Daniel0000 - Surrey

La Flotte is a wonderful place, however has been a bit 'wanting' in terms of nightlife. A gentleman named Olivier opened Les 2 Canons recently and is really trying to make it work. The location is a converted house about 100 meters from the port heading west. The setup is really cool, bar and piano area downstairs, a casual lounge with outdoor Terrace upstairs. This is a very small, casual space - not a big nightclub. They have live music a few nights of the week... call them or look at the sign outside for details. We saw a solo blues musician who was awesome as well as a jazz trio who were really good. The drink selection is hit/miss... an impressive range of aged rums, an uninspiring wine list, some good champagnes, and thankfully very well prepared cocktails. Live music is clearly the draw thusfar, so call in advance to check dates and arrive around 10pm for a great night.

Eglise Sainte-Catherine de La Flotte

Reviewed By Jean-Pierre D

This was a most enjoyable and pleasant visit, the doors were opened and very inviting. The entrance is spacious and unusual. The church is old and contains some beautiful art work and lovely stain glasses. Those stain glasses are not very hold (1876) but beautifully designed (these are now classified as Monuments Historiques in France). The background music was inspiring and created a lovely spiritual atmosphere where it is easy to pray and for non-believers it invites you to respect the solamnity of this beautiful place. For sailors religion was important and there is plenty of evidence that this church is full of spirituality. Please don't go to La Flotte without paying a visit to this most magnificent church.
