April 5, 2018 Velvet Mowry

Konitsa (Greek: Κόνιτσα) is a town of Ioannina in Epirus, Greece, near the Albanian border. It is located north of the capital Ioannina, and northeast of a group of villages known as the Zagorochoria. The town was built amphitheatrically-shaped on a mountain slope of the Pindos mountain range from where it overlooks the valley where the river Aoos meets the river Voidomatis.

Papigo Rafting

We had a blast rafting with Yiannis down the Voidomatis River, we were sad when it was over! All the gear and equipment was provided and Yiannis was a enthusiastic, skillful and most of all, safe, guide. Yiannis made sure we knew what we were doing but that we also had a great time, he provided all sorts of info about the area, flora, and fauna while we were rafting and we even had a nice pit stop in the middle of the river for some snacks and drinks. Our 8-year old daughter was with us and she loved it!

Voidomatis River

This rive has fantastic colors once it gets out of the ground. If you'll visit the Vikos canyon observation points, which have amazing views of their own, you'll be quite surprised to see that the river is (may be) actually dry on those spots. But further down, definitely below the village of Vikos and under the bridge of the road that leads to Papigo and Micro Papigo, the river is flowing in marvelous colors and allows a wonderful rafting experience (as long as you're in for the views and not for the rafting itself which is VERY calm). Overall, wonderful experience with amazing nature and river views.

Not a fan of religion, so I absolutely recommend the place just for the scenic route. The scenery going to the monastery is beautiful, especially if you love driving. The monastery is ok, no more than 20 minutes needed to spend there. Then, drive again and take some good music with you.

Agia Paraskevi Monastery

The monastery was interesting and built with lovely local stone. It is not far from the main square in Monodendri. The highlight is the view of the Vikos Gorge from the Terrace through a little archway at the northern end of the monastery. Keep walking though until you find it. Strangely for such a quiet place, there was a lady in a little gift shop with little things for sale. We did not find any to buy.

A great viewpoint of the canyon. Just a short walk suitable for kids also and really amazing. We recommend parking next to the sign and the beginning of the short trail and not at the end of the concrete road, any car can do it.

Tree Chapel Saint Paissiou

Tree Chapel Saint Paissiou This chapel was built - with faith and love - inside a tree following the footsteps of Saint Paissios 22 kilometers north of Konitsa in the village of Agia Varvara. The evergreen tree (oak) inside it had suffered several destructions and fires, resulting in a deteriorating condition each year. Thanks, however, to the idea and initiative of a resident of the village of Agia Varvara was saved to become a pilgrimage site of Saint Paissios. The weak blessed tree was internally shielded with stone from the area and turned into a tree-cloth. A picture was placed in honor of Saint Paissios, where, during his youth, he passed from Aghia Varvara to the nearby village of Amarantos to perform carpentry and repairs to local houses. In Greece, there are few similar churches - places of pilgrimage in a tree, which provoke the interest of Greek and foreign visitors.

its a small army museum of the 2nd www and especially of the resistance of the local population against the Italian forces on Oct and November of 1940, the firts days of war. It very sentimental as the people have donated most of the artifacts on display. It is kept by the army and the two soldiers that were ther were very polite and also give a small tour. Its on the main road and a quick visit, dont miss it to get an idea of what happened that era there.

Vikos – Aoos National Park

Reviewed By AlexanderP6308 - Uppsala, Sweden

We walked from Monodendri to Vikos. Prior to our walk, the owner of Karpouzis Guesthouse at Vikos gave us a ride to Monodendri (40 min, 35 EUR).
We had a problem finding good descriptions of the route. Neither it is well marked. Most of the way one should follow red marks "03". It took us 7.5 hours including a 1-hour picknick lunch break.
The weather was hot and there was no running water in the gorge, just few poles inhabited by frogs. Water that we dared to drink was available in only one (!) location, in the middle of the route.
The first half of the path is quite uneven, stony, up and down. The second half is much easier, except the final steep ascend to Vikos.
Views are magnificent, especially closer to Vikos where the landscape is more open. Otherwise one needs to enter the river path to enjoy the views. But: don't even think continuing along the river path instead of the trail. In other words: don't leave the trail.
We managed to see a turtle in the forest soon after leaving Monodendri.
At Vikos, we enjoyed a dinner at Karpouzis Guesthouse a lot - recommended!
