Mgahinga Gorilla National Park

Reviewed By tsavoman - Welshman in Alba

My wife and I visited Mgahinga Gorilla National Park to fulfil a lifetimes ambition to see Mountain Gorillas. We were not disappointed and indeed our 2 days trekking in the park will remain one of the best things that we have ever done!
We were met at the gate HQ on our first day by Allen and Simon who were to be our guides on our Golden Monkey trekking day, Following a comprehensive briefing at the visitor centre, Allen led the way up through the forest into the park. She was very well informed in the flora and fauna and pointed out familiar plants such as brambles and juniper along with giant earthworms on the path! She pointed out bushbuck as they disappeared amongst the trees and as we are keen birders, pointed out Albertine Rift specialities including ruwenzori double collared sunbird and even ruwenzori nightjar! We passed the spoor of buffalo and even when we saw one on the path we felt very safe in the hands of the guides. Entering the bamboo zone, we met the trackers who had located the golden monkeys. This very local subspecies of the blue monkey is delightful to watch as they gambol amongst the foliage. We were very lucky to hear the alpha male call out and had splendid views of many individuals at very close range, The designated hour went very quickly and we descended through the forest with huge smiles on our faces! Then as a bonus we were shown both male and female ruwenzori 3 horned chameleons and a tree hyrax, outstanding!! We thought it couldn't get any bettter until we went trekking for the mountain gorillas the next day!
Starting with some spectacular birding with the guides at the main gate (ruwenzori batis, white starred robin, African hill babbler, cinnamon bracken warbler etc. etc.) we set off back up through the forest. It must be said that due to the altitude the ascents can be tiring, but the guides are aware and are happy to allow frequent rest stops (we took a lot!). On the gorilla trek we had Clovis and Dan as our guides and they were always pointing out interesting wildlife on the trek (from deafening cicadas to the call of ruwenzori turaco). Meeting with the trackers after about 1.5 hours we were taken to the Gorillas..words cannot describe how incredible the encounter is, but to share an hour of one's life with silver back males, an adult female, a juvenile male and a baby, all getting on with their daily lives is one of the most amazing experiences that there is! The trackers and guides are on hand to provide interpretation on the life and behaviour of the gorillas. One recommendation, try just watching the gorillas without filming or looking through a lens, at least for a portion of the hour you are permitted and you will leave with only the best possible memories. I cannot thank the guides and the trackers and indeed the gorillas enough for allowing us such a most magical and memorable experience. So many people visit Bwindi, but at Mgahinga you are taking the trek less travelled. Extremely highly recommended!

We were so glad that we chose to visit Uganda with MGCT and support a very professional and reliable local tour operator! Communication via emails made it easy to arrange a tour that suited our interest in photography and choice of accommodations ahead of time. We started our 11-day tour with a "coffee" tour with Julius and to our surprise, had one of the best cups of coffee made with freshly roasted coffee beans right there at the farm! We wished we had bought more coffee beans back home! Denis was a great guide and a safe driver throughout our trip. We had great conversations and learned a lot about the people and culture of Uganda in addition to enjoying the great scenery and seeing the gorillas. Hope we'll get to visit again someday.

I am so thankful that I connected these guys. I spent only 2 days with these tours and I wish I spent more. My tours involved riding bikes to lake Mutunda, walking through villages, seeing amazing viewpoints and getting an authentic cultural village community experience which was a highlight of my trip. I highly suggest to take a tour. They support the local community and go out of their way to create a wonderful experience.

Virunga Volcanoes

Visiting gorillas is an amazing eperience and worth every $750 for the privilege. Be prepared for a minimum of one hour hike through mud, steep slopes, and dense bamboo forest. Some of our friends went for an "easy" hike and they end up walking close to two hours each way. If you are not a fit walker, hire a porter that will help you along the way. A minimum $10 charge for a porter will be well spend.
We stayed at the Volcanoes lodge that is quite expensive; try cheaper accommodations in the vicinity. Mind you, we were quite satisfied with our stay at this lodge.

Lake Mutanda Canoe Trekking

Experience the lake using the traditional dug-out canoes. We will paddle to Punishment Island, Forest Island and others and learn about south western Uganda as well as the history of this beautiful lake.

We hiked through the rural subsistence farmlands from Rubuguri Junction to Lake Mutanda and enjoyed a relaxed paddle across the lake in dugout canoes, followed by a short walk up the hill into Kisoro.

We picked Kori due to the first emails we received from Maggie responding to our queries on putting a short trip together. The excellent communications continued throughout and we were totally reassured by the contact, emails, payment receipts and answers to queries throughout.
We were picked up in Kigali (Rwanda), taken to Akagera National Park and then onto the Virungas for Gorilla trekking. Everything ran smoothly and the experience was so much more than we expected.
Our guide/driver Martine was excellent, a really lovely guy, very knowledgeable and made it a great experience.
I can't recommend Kori Safaris enough!
