What a hoot! The unique and creative designs of the public toilets in Kawakawa have made them a tourist destination. It's a five minute drive off highway 1 into Kawakawa. Toilets are on the main street and you can't miss them as there will be a crowd of tourists taking photos. Worth a stop if you're in the area. Parking is either on the street or in a public lot off the main street nearby.

Lovely ride today on Gabriel through the town. Ann the guard was very informative and knowledgeable about both the town and the trains history. Visited the longest wooden bridge in the Southern hemisphere before returning to Kawakawa. Look out for the lava tree!

Access to this highly significant site is via a gravel rd (5kms from the south or 14kms from the north of the main highway, between Paiha and Whangarei).
There are informative signs around the site explaining the history of the area and of the ensuing battle that was fought here. There is nothing left of the Pa itself other than the tunnels and ditches that were dug, however the site still remains and you can visualise the enormity of what took place. Sadly not well known however well worth the detour from the highway.

This sits opposite the famous Hunderwasser toilet and is in the same style. As you enter there are murals and large artworks etc made of mosaic. A lot of it was closed when we went. It is quite interesting. There is an " honesty" donation box at the front.

Kings Theatre Creative is the largest art gallery in the Bay of Islands. Representing over 300 local artists it is certainly an experience with the vibrant, creative and bicultural talent Taitokerau/Northland has to offer. Kings Theatre was build in 1936's and operated as a movie cinema 'the Showplace of the Bay of Islands' until 1976; the theatre has been operating as a creative trust for three years and offers a Foyer Gallery, a larger Theatre Gallery and back stage studio space for artist studio's. Well laid out art gallery in an old theatre. Art is very nice an da few genuine unique pieces which would be worth purchasing if you were looking for this type of thing.

Typical small town historical society/ museum. Newspaper articles from the 1930's floods, the politics of building the hospital and what happened to the historic post office. Information about local artists and a nice model of the future Hunterwasser visitor centre. Maps and weddings and floods and fires and... see my photos...

Hundertwasser Memorial Park in Kawakawa township is a park in development stages as of August 2016. It is planned to provide a peaceful green area as a tribute to the artist/architect Friedensreich Hundertwasser who designed and built the Hundertwasser Toilet Building in Kawakawa and lived in the area until his untimely passing. The trees are presently young, but the area is a pleasant area to walk or sit and have lunch away from the Main Street of Kawakawa. Access to the Park and it's carparking is via Mackereth Lane, Kawakawa.

heard the name but didnt see any obvious evidence of the park's existence other than the toilets. There is a website but even that doesnt say the park exists.
