George L. Carter Railroad Museum

Reviewed By tumbleweedchris - Asheville, United States

The Railroad museum is located on the ETSU campus. 176 Ross Dr is the address I found and successfully navigated to. There are a couple signs on campus and a railroad marker in front of the building. The hours are narrow (Sat 10a-3p) so be aware of that before visiting. When I showed up, there was a sign on the door saying they were temporarily closed. I was disappointed, but saw a family come out. So I went in to find the museum with the doors open for business! The museum is split over two rooms. One is a model railroad for a line that runs from Johnson City to Boone. There is an abundance of realistic detail here. You will find historic photos along the display that match the models almost exactly. There are stools throughout to give you a boosted view of the layout. The other side is a mixture of locations and is a larger room. You'll see some incredibly long trains here running around the building. You will find several volunteers working on the display and able to answer questions if you have any. This is a meticulously cared for Railroad Museum. With no charge to enter (donations accepted), there is no reason not to see this wonderful handiwork.

While a typical library, books on the shelf, digital media, etc., it also hosts a reading program for children, several programs for adults, and an excellent e-book section. There are several computers for use with free access to the internet and a link to Ancestry for those researching their family. There are several areas with easy chairs for delving into the latest novel or simply sitting and relaxing.

Tweetsie Trail

Reviewed By EaglesPrincess - Minneapolis, United States

We started at the trailhead in Johnson City and took the trail almost 6 miles, ending in Elizabethton near Sycamore Shoals. The path is clear and has lovely historic markers along the way. Plenty of benches are available as are mile markers about every 0.2 miles. The only issues are access to restrooms/porta potties are limited on the trail. Lighting is also an issue if you are planning to go in the evening. The trail currently spans 9.6 miles. I would love to see this finished at 10 miles as the course would make an excellent 10 miler run course.
