What to do and see in Johannesburg, Gauteng: The Best Antique Stores

September 21, 2021 Sachiko Swiger

Johannesburg is the place to go to mix big-city culture, shopping, dining and nightlife with outdoor adventures, up-close wildlife encounters and visits to historical sites. Explore caves and nature reserves, or visit a traditional village by day, then enjoy dinner at a hip cafe or five-star restaurant. And if you're a shopper, bring an extra, empty suitcase. With malls, open-air markets and places that blend the two, you'll find plenty of unique souvenirs.

James Findlay - Collectable Books & Maps

Please join us at the Dickensian book shop that is James Findlay’s gallery at Rand Club. Aptly situated in one of Johannesburg's landmark Neoclassical buildings. This 175 square metre basement space has been transformed into a book shop and gallery with a stage. On exhibition are hundreds of posters; more than 500 antique maps; over a thousand hand coloured botanical lithographs and of course books. “It’s the dramatic side for this fascinating industry that I’m trying to present here” says James Findlay who has been in the trade for 23 years. "These vintage posters are artefacts themselves. Not only do they represent a period in our history, they were present at that time. These decorative objects are not only there to beautify people’s homes, but they have the added allure of being historical”. Join us at one of our regular events to hear stories about these treasures, meet other like minded collectors and ask the advice of a dealer.

What a gorgeous shop in the stunning Rand Club! I am biased because, as a collector, I have spent significant sums of money purchasing maps, art, books and other unique items from James. His prices are amazing for the quality. There's a lot of hidden gems in terms of prints and books, and 95% of everything is reasonably priced and if it costs more it's worth it! James is a great wealth of knowledge. He has more than just older Africana (which is what I collect) but also modern political (ie. 1950s to 1980s) art, posters and paraphernalia and an awesome mix of classical, botanical, architectural and other delights.
