What to do and see in Jackson Hole, Jackson Hole: The Best Tours

January 15, 2022 Margarita Chappel

During the winter, Jackson Hole is a wonderland of snow skiing, snowmobiling and ice-skating. Summer in Jackson Hole is all about hiking, whitewater rafting, golfing and horseback riding. When you come down off the slopes, you can choose from recreation options like dog sled tours, sleigh rides and wildlife and nature tours. During the summer, you better get your energy level up because kayaking, hang gliding, hot air ballooning, mountain biking and stagecoach rides are just a few of the many options available. For climbers, hikers and nature lovers, the nearby Grand Teton National Park is an absolute nirvana. The towering mountains of the Teton Range stretch 40 miles, and include eight mountains over 12,000 feet. Keep in mind, too, that Yellowstone National Park’s South Entrance is only 90 minutes away, and another 45 minutes or so to reach Old Faithful. If you’re looking for some serious, fast-paced family fun in Jackson Hole, try the Alpine Slide, where you slide down 2,500 feet of Snow King Mountain in a bobsled. For a calmer experience, enjoy the Bridger Gondola, which takes tram riders from the Teton Village to heights of 10,000 feet. Golf enthusiasts have access to some great golf with tee opportunities at Jackson Hole Golf & Tennis Club, a Robert Trent Jones Jr. design and Teton Pines Resort Golf Course, designed by Arnold Palmer.

Discovery Channel experience with Obsidian Cliff Tours and Stacy Nolan! October 7th Husband and I did a one-day private tour of Yellowstone. Stacy contacted me a few weeks prior to tour to understand our goals for the day - wild life spotting, hiking, main tourist attractions, photography, etc. We wanted to see wildlife and fit in some of the tourist areas if time allowed. Stacy picked us up at our hotel in West Yellowstone (they can pick up from most areas near the Park) at 7:30 with awesome breakfast sandwiches and juice to eat on our drive out to Lamar Valley (I think it was about 1.5 hours). I’m not a breakfast sandwich person but these were really good, on fluffy English muffins. We also ate lunch in the van to save time. Several things that stand out about Obsidian Cliff Tours and Stacy: Covid awareness - van was clean and Stacy wore mask in the van (not the case with other tours we took). Additionally, Stacy reminded us to not touch railings and put masks on when we were in the midst of other tourists. Fortunately this didn’t occur often as Stacy took a route that was opposite to that followed by most park visitors, Stacy has a radio to listen to park rangers dealing with animals on the road and wandering near tourists. He also speaks to his guides and other guide companies to learn where recent wildlife have been hanging out. As well, he knows animals’ favorite hangouts from his many years of experience. As a result, we saw a lot of wildlife, including bison, elk, wolves, pronghorns and coyotes. The only animal we missed were bears. We were actually in a bison stampede! Stacy definitely fulfilled our request to see wildlife! I greatly appreciated Stacy stopping at the best bathrooms in the park (large, clean, regularly maintained, with running water)! I felt very safe with Stacy’s driving and safety precautions when we were in the woods. Stacy regularly took photos and videos of the highlights of the day and forwarded them to us. Great photos for our album. He even shared photos of bears that he had seen a few days earlier. Omg, so much knowledge about the animals, the geology, ecological efforts and the Park’s history. For example, we learned why many dead trees are white at the bottom of the trunk (the Bobby socks effect), why large bison herds are comprised of mostly females, how views on wildfires are changing, and so much more. I highly recommend you take the tour to find out the answers these questions and many more. Stacy is a great story teller about events that have taken place in the park and on his past tours. He kept us wanting more. The tour lasted nearly 12 hours and I realized the following day, when I looked at the map, that we had covered the entire Park, including the major tourist sites with the exception of Ol’ Faithful and the Prismatic spring. I specifically asked Stacy to skip these since we could easily view those on our own. We covered more ground than we ever would have on our own!

We did an all day tour in Grand Teton National Park with Kelsie and Jeff. BEST DAY EVER! The day started off with them picking us up at our hotel at 0545 sharp! Beautiful weather. Our day was filled with sightings; moose, elk herd, bison, grizzly mom & cub, lone grizzly, 2 fox, white tail deer, mule deer, grouse, bald eagles, red wing hawks, kestrel and many more small birds which Jeff could identify by their call. The breadth of their combined knowledge is truly amazing. We learned so much about the local wildlife, park ecosystem, geological information about the Grand Tetons and local history. We finished the day with lunch at Dornan’s restaurant at Moose Junction. Lots of good humor and good food. It is my opinion, everyone who visits this area would benefit from one of the tours offered. We took a 12 hour tour into Yellowstone. It was so nice to not have to worry about driving and trying to navigate the park. All we had to do was sit back and relax and take in the beauty. Jeremy was our guide and he was awesome! We learned so much about the park. Not only was Jeremy a wealth of knowledge, he can spot the animals even if they look like a little spec in the terrain. We saw a grizzly, elk, bison, moose, and many different types of birds. Jeremy took us to so many beautiful landmarks. We felt like we really experienced so much of Yellowstone. Thank you for a wonderful day!

We booked the one day yellowstone tour out of Jackson hole since they were very responsive over the phone. Overall it was OK. Our tour driver was very nice however he was very long-winded. Too much detail about everything that the group was getting annoyed. Fortunately we had Brian’s number and he was kind enough to give the driver our feedback and the rest of the tour was better. Pros: - plenty of time for pictures - convenient pick up from a location close to where we stayed - nice people on the bus - lunch and breakfast provided - plenty of bathroom breaks Con: - stoping to see tractors and other farm equipment - bus was a little older - cup holders broken off back of the seats (holes in the fabrics) and no storage space for belongings. And lacking phone chargers. - timing to see old faithful could have been better - not as much wildlife as we expected
