Ivrea (Italian pronunciation: [iˈvrɛːa]; French: Ivrée, Latin: Eporedia) is a town and comune of the Metropolitan City of Turin in the Piedmont region of northwestern Italy. Situated on the road leading to the Aosta Valley (part of the medieval Via Francigena), it straddles the Dora Baltea and is regarded as the centre of the Canavese area. Ivrea lies in a basin that in prehistoric times formed a large lake. Today five smaller lakes — Sirio, San Michele, Pistono, Nero and Campagna — are found in the area around the town.

Orange Battle

This is one of Italy’s most unusual festivals. Held during carnival in mid-winter, the entire town of Ivrea near Turin turns into a battlefield where oranges are thrown in the streets, reenacting a legendary battle for freedom from oppression. There are nine 'teams' representing the different neighbourhoods of the town that participate in the battle. To avoid being pelted by citrus, make sure you find a spot behind one of the large nets that are set up all over town.

See thousand of people fighting between on the ground teams and chariots in the city squares is an incredible spectacle you should see live at least once, have you ever seen 300+ tons of oranges thrown every battle day. It provides a different emotion. By the way, you might also be active part of it registering in one of the 9 ground team (most have their site to read and ask for info). Consider that the battle last 3 days + additional days of other Historical Carnival events/parties.

Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta

Just a few steps off the beaten track there is a gem! Forget the renaissance part of the cathedral and head for the romanesque part around the altar and choir and the crypt. Marvelous arched architecture and remnants of frescoes from the XIII to the XV century. They all tell stories we have a hard time interpreting today. And yet, centuries ago, for people who couldn't read, they were like books. The crypt is stunning and one tries to imagine the candlelight services around which early Christians gathered. Do leave a penny in the collection box for restoration work.
