This Romanesque church is really something. It looks big, but nothing special from outside. But inside there is an amazing surprise. The painted columns emphasize the beauty of this church. One of the most beautiful I have seen in my journey around France.

Chateau de Parentignat

The château of Parentignat was built between 1707 and 1720 by Anne-Francois de Lastic, Marquess of Sieujac and Captain of a Royal infantry regiment, on the foundations of an old fortress. The chateau remains in the family to this day and is the object of an extensive restoration programme. The landscaped Gardens can be viewed from the Terrace at the back of the château, which is lined with heirloom roses and fantastic orange trees in their original 18th century pots. The gaiety of this green and pleasant "natural" garden provides a stark contrast with the formal geometry of the lawns in the front courtyard which have been restored recently, along with the avenue of lime trees leading to the chateau's entrance. The château has always been renowned for being so sumptuously appointed. Its furniture and art collections have always been exceptional.

The chateau is known as the little Versailles, and is considered "living history" as the present day owners still live in it. It's family-owned and handed down through the generations, which gives it a special feel.
The guided tour costs 9e each, and is conducted in French, and the guide spoke extensively about the art pieces in the chateau, which ranged from paintings to tapestries to sculptures. There is even a modern piece currently on exhibition (I think until September 2012), but I shall not spoil the surprise.
The garden out the back is English style, and one is allowed to roam the grounds freely before/after the guided tour. Lovely for photography, which is just as well since photo-taking is not permitted in the chateau itself.
Visit only if you are confident in understanding French (I only understood about 85% of what was said), or if you have a kind enough friend to translate for you, as I was told the tour is not conducted in English. Otherwise, it's really worth the visit, especially the library!

Apart from the Tour de L'Horloge this town is quite unremarkable I guess we have been spoilt by the beautiful towns in Provence and the Ardeche but I would not bother a detour if this is not on route

Bonne visite !

An average expereince that seemed to promise so much more. Not much in the way of roman art which we expected and only one section contained any english translation ( I know we shouldnt be so lazy).
It is mainly a museum of medieval life working the vines and some background to the Abbey
