What to do and see in Isola Vulcano, Sicily: The Best Things to do

August 23, 2021 Deane Carmody

According to the Ancient Greeks, the god Hephaestus used Isolo Vulcano as sort of his own private blacksmith shop. Here you can clamber up volcanoes like Scalata al Cratere and rejuvenate in the warm and gooey sulfur mud baths of Laghetto di Fanghi. Kayaking is a popular way to take in the beauty of Vulcano’s grottoes and coastlines.

Easy walk up, even accessible for non sportive people. But requires a good balance for the walk down, and good shoes. Great for nice pictures and nice open landscape. A must do!

Spiaggia dell'Asino

The plus of a speed boat in the aeolian archipelago is that you can go breakfast on one island, lunch in the next one and dinner party of the following. The Asino beach is definitely the best stop for the day: no matter how big is your boat or how large is your crowd: the beach is secured with safety nets and the boat shuttle is with you to bring you on this paradise beach in a few minutes all day long. The resort is imbedded within the rocks and sand and you feel like bricks and cement never existed - and never should. The serving staff is very friendly, fast and multilingual to offer you lunch or drinks on the stunning beach or on their large terrace in the shadow of local trees, palms and rocks. Plenty of sofas and chill out corners exist under the rocks to allow you the most resting experience before going back to your boat. I always feel like I could spend there the whole night, but obviously this is not an option...:) As this side of the island is protected between the whole archipelago and the Sicilian main land, the see is always flat and perfect for any water sport. Not to miss it and certa lu to come back every year - for those who can.

we spent a week here on the island, there is something very special about being on a small island where you can walk to almost everything. Really good supermarket right next to a wonderful ice cream shop and they will deliver to your holiday home if you have anything heavy. The mud baths were worth a dip, only 3Euro plus 2Euro for a shower. After the dip you can go in the sea which has some hot bubbles coming up, making it fun. Be warned the clothes you wear that day will hold the scent of sulphur for a few washes or else wear something that you dont want to keep! We rented a house from Luigi through Airbnb. what a nice guy, really helpful, took us shopping the first day, showed us the best places to eat and took us on two boat trips.

Yes, you should be careful, as it might not be enjoyable not for everyone The smell of sulfur is strong, and besides, not everyone likes mud baths. In Israel we have the Dead Sea which also offers the same kind of baths so they weren't a surprise to us. Still this is one of the main attractions of this island and if you have the time for it, and some courage as well, you should try it. Either way, this should be an unforgettable experience ;-)
