What to do and see in Island of Hawaii, Hawaii (HI): The Best Transportation

April 6, 2022 Darleen Reid

Life on the Big Island is a little bit slower… and locals like it that way. The natural beauty and ecological features of the island are a draw for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Test your chutzpah at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the longest volcanic eruption in recorded history, or climb to the indescribably beautiful summit of Mauna Kea. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more refreshing than a quivering plate of fresh poke, followed by a fruity shave ice.

I booked a private car tour around the Big Island with the owner John for our family of four. Given we have 1 teenage boy and 1 young boy, I wanted to make sure there would be enough interesting sights to entertain them. John was extremely friendly and informative over the phone. He suggested several good options with flexibility for customisation. The day began punctually with a pickup at our hotel. We then visited a coffee farm, a donut shop, a black sand beach, and Volcanoes National Park. Given it was a private tour, we had the luxury of enjoying a late lunch at a popular local eatery recommended by John. We then had desserts at Big Island Candies. It was like Christmas in July. John saved the best for last - a visit to a private farm with organic, sustainable and symbiotic farming techniques. We learned about the importance of placing plants on different parts of a slope with varying needs of water; we saw the symbiotic benefits of raising ducks for insect controls and fertilization. We all laughed out loud when a duck followed the farm owner around like a loyal dog waiting for a treat. John capped off our tour with a scenic drive back to Kona with sights of waterfalls and gulches. We arrived back to our hotel tired but happy. Most importantly, John was a safe and reliable driver and we all felt comfortable in his car. It was amazing to experience so much beauty and majesty of the Big Island in just one single day. And the best part of it was having John as our captain!
