What to do and see in Island of Hawaii, Hawaii (HI): The Best Horseback Riding Tours

December 18, 2021 Mollie Coke

Life on the Big Island is a little bit slower… and locals like it that way. The natural beauty and ecological features of the island are a draw for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Test your chutzpah at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, home to the longest volcanic eruption in recorded history, or climb to the indescribably beautiful summit of Mauna Kea. At the end of the day, there’s nothing more refreshing than a quivering plate of fresh poke, followed by a fruity shave ice.

My husband and i made a weekend away trip to Big Island during this stifling pandemic season. This fun, refreshing and healing time of horseback riding on vast green pasture overlooking the Pacific ocean was way beyond our expectaction and it made our trip so worthwhile and memorable! Jackie's safe guide and her joyful spirit doubled our satisfaction! Thanks Na'alapa Stables!

This is probably the best way to see Waipio Valley! Otherwise, you can drive up and hike down, but all the property in the valley is privately owned, so you can't go beyond the road. Grace was a wonderful guide, telling us stories of the valley and about the plants we passed through. Highly recommend!

My family (with two teens) reserved a private sunset ride this April, which was very simple to do online as they have a nice website. I'm glad I opted for the private ride because it was really fun having just our family, and we had personal attention from the wrangler (who was terrific). My horse was a little stubborn and a bully which I thought was funny. The others obeyed pretty well. For a family who are not riders, it was comforting that the horses knew where they were going, and when to trot at the appropriate times. We weren't afraid, even my husband who has a mistrust of large animals. The land and sunset were beautiful, and it was neat afterward being able to look up towards the mountains from Mauna Lani and see where we had ridden! One of the novel things that were both useful & made me feel like I was in a Hollywood film was being able to borrow cowboy boots and a duster coat. We looked like a City Slicker film. We bonded as a family. The ride itself was a little uncomfortable because we aren't seasoned (knees in particular). It was long enough to get a good experience, but not so long that we were walking funny afterwards. The people working there are super nice, patient, organized, and understand covid. *I'd recommend this ranch to anyone.* I think horses can be helpful to those with special needs, also, including anxiety.
