Iglesia de Quinchao

Reviewed By Cosimo_de_Medici - Orlando, United States

On the road south of Achao, and past the spectacular mirador (look out), is the town of Quinchao. This tiny village with a very beautiful waterfront contains this most impressive church. From the outside you can imagine the woodworkers building this structure with care and love. Once you step inside however, you are initially overwhelmed by the size and the work that has been performed. Look up to take in the boat builder style vaulted ceiling. It is truly a stunning structure especially because of it's location. Learning just a little of the history you find that on December 8 all of the villages around the area come here to pray. And one can understand why. Enjoy the drive here, be amazed at this World Heritage site and savor this building initially contructed at the end of the 18th century. You won't regret it. I was there on a Monday around 11:30 am and it was open to the public. Donations are welcomed.

Mirador Alto La Paloma

If you don´t have your own transport (as we didn´t) I´d recommend catching the bus up the hill for 500 pesos. You can easily walk back down into town afterwards if it isn´t raining too hard.

Iglesia de Santa Maria de Loreto

Reviewed By KatrienS955 - Ghent, Belgium

This is the oldest wooden church on the archipel of Chiloe, build in the early 18th century. As a result, it is the only church on these islands that has a barok interior. Not over the top decorated, as some churches in Peru and Mexico, but many more decorations and altars than the other churches. The ceiling is painted blue and very special. The whole church is very beautiful, and well worth taking the 15 minute ferry for. The ferries are frequent and efficient.

It is an old water mill where the families grind wheat and other grains.
