What to do and see in Iowa, United States: The Best Distilleries

September 29, 2021 Brandee Mangan

History and monuments dot this landscape almost as often as the golden farmlands. Learn about America’s 31st president at the Herbert Hoover Presidential Library and Museum in West Branch. In northeast Iowa is the Effigy Mounds National Monument, a group of prehistoric American Indian burial and ceremonial mounds. This part of Iowa is also home to the Silos and Smokestacks National Heritage. The 37-county region tells the story of American agriculture, agribusiness and farm life and is affiliated with the National Park Service. In addition, there are five national wildlife refuges here. If you love history, imagine seeing the Amana Colonies, consisting of seven historic villages in 1855 by German immigrants as a religious communal society. Here you can also buy antiques, hand-woven baskets, furniture and clocks and locally made wine and beer. In Ames, take the family to see the Christian Petersen Art Museum, a newer structure that exhibits works of art by Christian Petersen and contemporary artists. You won’t want to miss the state capital of Des Moines, home to Blank Park Zoo with its naturalistic exhibits and more than 800 animals from five continents. You also should enjoy the Brenton Skating Plaza, an outdoor family entertainment venue.

Templeton Rye

Reviewed By pjjewel - Templeton, United States

We are Templeton residents, so when family members come to visit, they want to visit the new distillery and learn the history of "The Good Stuff". The makers of Templeton Rye have done an excellent job of marketing the whiskey, and the addition of the museum and distillery tour have contributed to this. While the link between the current whiskey recipe and the true prohibition one is dubious, the tour provides some great insight into the history of the town and the critical role bootlegging played in keeping this tiny town alive. The tour starts in the museum (very well done, by the way) and ends in the tasting room where each adult gets a shot of the good stuff, before ending in the Gift Shop. All of our visitors have enjoyed the stop!

Foundry Distilling Company

I flew into Des Moines September 3rd, from Kentucky. I immediately got an Uber and met up with my local Iowan friends at Foundry for an event. Once arrived we sat down to a 4 course meal of which I ate the most amazing steak of my life! They supplied different whiskeys to try and some cigars with live music. Afterwards we got a private tour or the distillery and got to know some of the employees, they’re extremely friendly and welcoming. Overall it’s a must try, I can wait to go back to Des Moines because Foundry will be a mandatory stop every time I visit. Thank you for the hospitality

Mississippi River Distilling Company & Cody Road Cocktail House

LeClaire, Iowa. It's a special place. A place where life on the land is intimately married to the flow of the waters. For centuries, people here have looked to the water for a sense of calm, a spirit of enjoyment and a connection to a heritage that is uniquely their own. That marriage of land and water is now embodied in a different kind of spirit. The Mississippi River Distilling Company hand craft Vodka, Gin, Whiskey, and Specialty Spirits slow and pure near the banks of the Mississippi River. Born from the finest grains, harvested just up the hill from the distillery. It’s a spirit born of land and water that draws each of us curiously back to a different era. Made for you, not for for the masses.
