Fuyuan National Forest Recreation Area, through which Fuyuan Creek runs, is often referred to as “Butterfly Valley”. It is the terminal of the east end of the “Guanmen Historical Trail” with a circular trail network in all directions. The center of the network is Longyin Suspension Bridge and Fuyuan Waterfall, which is quiet and peaceful and provides such touring options as bird watching, butterfly watching, forest bathing, and hot springs. We visited in a rainy day last Sunday. Except me, all my friends were the first time visitor. They were stunning at the old town building and the atmosphere here. Hiking here just like wandering in the past century. All we have seen illustrated the truth of impermanence. All good and bad have gone.

Chihnan is one of three major legends of Hualien forest: the starting point of Mt. Halun forest railway features an old train with a locomotive engine, lumber collecting machine, numerous materials, and old pictures. In addition to the history, Chihnan has various Moraceae and Lauraceae dominant forests with Eastern Taiwan’s only Formosan Bulbul (Pycnonotus taivanus), butterflies, and fireflies. This spot is a great choice for getting close to nature.
