I sited just briefly this trip but the restaurant was not open at in this shoulder season but check on weekends. Great little store, lots of cabins, water craft rentals, treed trails and winding holly roads. Beautiful views of a large lake. Spectacular views of the lake from cliffs.

This was my first time to the Homestead. The place is so incredible. Guests were sitting on the veranda/porch as you drive up, just enjoying being there. The hotel is historic which means there are going to be imperfections, but just take it in as a whole. The staff is pleasant. The lobby bar is a bit too small and needs some craft beers, but it was quaint. We were in meetings all day so no time for the spa but we did go and look at it. It looked very nice. I wish I could have gone in the octagonal pool. The gym is in a different builidng but has a lot to offer. The pool was fabulous. The sleeping room was also nice, it looked like they may have just renovated the bathroom. We came across an herb garden and spoke to the chef that was maintaining it. Just little things that made it unique. Overall this place is grand and I highly recommend.

They say that Jefferson spent three weeks here for his arthritis pain. Probably the last time the place was cared for? Omni has their name on the door, but if Was the GM I would be afraid the roof over the women's pool would collapse while guests were in there. Some story about a conversation between the local folks and the hotel is keeping the renovations from being made. Well, soak at your own risk, traveler!

Saturday fall golf. Golf course in great condition. Gorgeous day. Cheerful, friendly service from starter, bag staff, and pro shop. The Cascades is a must stop for golf in Southwest Virginia. Course closes for winter in early November.

Bolar Mountain Recreation Area is in a remote area of south western VA, near the border of West Virginia. Because it's our first family camping trip, I'm starting at 4-stars. However, I'll update it after our summer of camping (visiting more sites throughout VA). Honestly, I'm not sure if any other sites will live up to this one but we'll see.
We had site 28, which is a beautiful water front site, marked as premium. We had two tents (6-person and a 2-person), plus a hammock, and a canopy tent over the picnic table. There was plenty of room to move around but it would probably be tight with two families and two cars.
The lot itself has gorgeous and peaceful views of the lake. We saw everything from families of geese and their babies eating near the grass-water line in mornings, to frogs mating in the evening. That was a first for me. Our young girls thought they were playing piggy-back. There were chipmunks, birds and one black (harmless) snake that crawled into our kayak. The chipmunks are out to get your bread, so make sure all of your food is kept in your car. We were careful most of the time but we slipped in watching the bread after breakfast. A chipmunk was on the table and through the wrapping around the bread in seconds.
If you leave the campsite and drive a little ways down to the marina, you can rent canoes and kayaks. We rented two double kayaks for 8 hours and were able to get a closer view of the lake. It was a great upper body workout. It was about 1.5 miles from the marina back to the campsite by kayak. We pulled the kayaks up and took an afternoon siesta, before heading back out to the water to explore the islands across from the campsite.
There is a beach, several picnic pavilions and an outdoor movie theater for Saturday movie night. We wanted to take the girls to see the Saturday movie but they were passed out in the hammock by 7pm.
Site 28 is right in front of a the bathrooms, which are just fancy outhouses, but they are so well kept, you'd hardly notice. You can find a trail behind the bathrooms that goes up a hill to the showers and modern bathrooms, which are also very clean and well-kept. Everyone is friendly and they come by your site at night to remind you of quiet time the first night you visit. I really appreciated it because I've read horror stories of campsites that don't honor their quiet time rule.
We will definitely be back (in a few weeks!) and I can't wait to visit another campsite loop.

This was a quick but beautiful stop. You can't hike to the bottom anymore (fenced off and signs warn that you are being recorded and will be fined). Its a beautiful view but disappointed that i couldn't experience them up-close like I had hoped.

If staying at the Homestead, I'd recommend getting the golf package instead of paying a la carte. For a couple, it's a bargain.
We'd played the Old Course 9 years ago and left with mediocre impressions. It's obvious that the Omni and Clubcorp before them put some money into making it a better course since then. The fairways and greens were in excellent condition. The challenge comes from the rolling terrain - mostly narrow fairways tilt up, down or sideways; a number of blind shots; raised greens; thick fescue rough.
The variety of the holes and beautiful surrounding scenery all make for a fun few hours. Pace of play on a Wednesday was fine, around 4 hours. Occasional historical plaques offer interesting glimpses into the course's legendary past.
The cart girl came around every few holes but only offered light snacks, nothing substantial like sandwiches; not even granola bars.
The staff in the pro shop didn't ooze friendliness, but the workers in the cart area were helpful and pleasant.

Exceptional music and personable staff. We thoroughly enjoyed the concert and infomal structure. We learned the history and unique educational concept for fostering chamber music as a lively hood foe aspiring artists from Shawn Puller, executive director. Will definitely return as this is a hidden gem in a beautiful rural setting.

Easily accessed parking off Rt 39. Excellent views of the river valley and distant mountains.
Well marked trail to the north provides an interesting hike maintained by the Nature Conservancy. Have hiked the trail in winter and summer. Panoramic vistas more grand in winter.
Great stop for a quick view or to enjoy a pleasant hike.

Wandered in, saw great art, mostly plein Aire, all first class, talked to Barbara, Been in business 21 years. Something is going right and I think it is the art and the owner and the local Support. Bath county is s painters paradise.
