What to do and see in Hood River, Oregon (OR): The Best Things to do Good for a Rainy Day

June 4, 2021 Alida England

Hood River beckons travelers with the scent of orchard blooms and the promise of adventure on the rushing waters of the Columbia River. The winds through the Columbia River Gorge provide the perfect conditions for windsurfing and kite surfing, making the city a hotspot for those sports in recent years. The surrounding area is ripe with orchards growing cherries, apples, peaches and other sweets. Take the Mt. Hood Scenic Railroad through the orchard route and take in the views of Mt. Hood.

Western Antique Aeroplane & Automobile Museum

The WAAAM Air & Auto Museum has one of the largest collections of still-flying antique aeroplanes and still-driving antique automobiles in the country. The items on display at this museum are not only full of history, they're full of LIFE! Enjoy over three-and-a-half acres of indoor exhibit space.

I first heard of WAAAM years ago, shortly after they opened. At first I thought "An antique airplane and car museum in Hood River? How good could that be?" I have come to rue those thoughts. If only I had visited much sooner. If you like antique planes, this is a must see, bucket list item. The number and variety of antique aircraft is simply astonishing. And the fact that the planes are maintained in flying condition - well, that is just fantastic. I am not a pilot, but I do like vintage aircraft. I love to see all the details that make up a craft that can take to the air, in the relatively simple form of old airplanes. You can see all the working bits in some of these planes. Take a look at the 1910 Curtis Pusher, where you CAN see everything. If you also like vintage cars, those are here in abundance as well. Would you like to learn how to drive old cars? WAAAM has you covered there as well. I have taken the Model T driving course, and will be back for another one. Seriously, I cannot say enough good things about WAAAM, it is simply wonderful.

We stopped at on our way out of Hood River. It's a very open and inviting place to visit, spend some time in the nice outdoor seating areas, peruse the shopping areas for great snacks and treats. They have a good selection of apples, pears and other seasonal produce plus jams, jellies, salad dressings, etc One of the best stops on the Fruit Loop, and I highly recommend.

My wife and I were staying in Hood River as part of our NW U.S road trip and we had identified FSBC as a place to visit. Full Sail offers a great range of awarding winning ales, it was a warm day and we were lucky to secure a table on the front patio with the balcony view. We ordered a couple of cheese soups and turkey sands - delicious. Not wishing to leave our balcony view table we ordered a couple more beers. In addition to the bar and restaurant, brewery tours are available free of charge. Well worth a visit.

Marchesi Vineyards

Franco Marchesi's passion for wine began in his hometown of Borgosesia, Peimonte, Italy. As a child he always wondered what it would be like to be a winemaker like his grandfather Achille. After running his own import company specializing in Italian wines for over 20 years, Franco began planting his favorite Northern Italian grapes in Hood River, where the climate and soil are just like Northern Italy. Please come visit, and taste our wines. Salute!

First of all let me begin with my impression of the safety adhered to at Marchesi. I’m a senior and considered high risk for Covid so I am nervous about going out. Marchesi goes overboard to insure the safety of customers as well as their staff. I felt totally safe there. This is our favorite winery in Hood River. Today we enjoyed a lovely bottle of Rose made with Sangiovese grapes. We sat among the grape vines and had a delightful time.
