Located on the southern edge of Kealakekua Bay, Pu'honua Honaunau was designated as a National Park in 1961. Also called Place of Refuge this extraordinary historical sight offers a fascinating journey through Hawaiian history. Within the extensive grounds of the park are a Great Wall over 1000 feet long and 10 feet high built of lava rock in the 1500's, reconstructed thatched roof Hawaiian houses, temples and wooden carvings of gods protecting the Hale-o-Keawe mausoleum. Park Rangers offer introductory talks at times during the day and a visitors center, restroom facilities, picnic tables, tide pools, hiking trails and free audio tour of the cultural sights is available. There is a small fee to park.

Turtles! Lots and lots and lots of fish and we saw an eel too! The coral is varied and lots of it, the water was calm and there was lots to explore. We found a super easy spot to enter the water, and this is now our favorite snorkeling spot on the Big Island!

The Big Island always rewards rambling exploration and Bay View Farm was the best example of this on our latest trip. We were on our way to the Painted Church and stopped off here because we weren't in a hurry and it wound up being the sleeper highlight of our trip as we spent an hour talking story and learning more about coffee, macadamia nuts, and fruit than we ever thought possible. The views are legendary, the coffee and snacks are great, but the feeling of Aloha will leave a lasting impression for our group of 6. Be sure to get your photo taken with Honey, the guard dawg.

We were greeted by a full rainbow and then to follow a beautiful sunset. There is an area where you can swim amongst the water. There is a nice little area to walk around the point but be careful it can be slippery due to the loose rocks. There is beautiful coral to see. I would recommend this to see the sunset.
