Sugar Pine State Park

This park in the Lake Tahoe region has nearly two miles of lake frontage, with dense forests of pine, fir, aspen and juniper.

Lovely Mansion Beach with Erhmann Mansion you can tour. Limited picnic tables and benches but lake views and grounds are worth visiting. Little critters will pester you for food, but they are not so annoying as to ruin a great afternoon visit.

The views you will have from this spot are simply fabulous so find a way to stop and see first hand.. As other reviews indicate you have to be patient and search out a place to park as it is a very popular stop. Be sure to bring your camera or phone as it is a great place to bring home a memory of your visit. Enjoy.

Great stop to view Emerald Bay and a short downhill hike, but not when there is a lot of snow. Great photo opportunity. Fees are apparently charged for the summer time but not in the winter time.

Meeks Bay Beach

Includes public and private resort beaches, which are both well-kept.

Reviewed By Sandy S - Loomis, California

The campground is steps away from the white sand beach. Volleyball courts are at the ready. There is a little snack shack overlooking the beach and the bright blue water of Lake Tahoe. Back in the campground: each campsite is covered with wood chips to reduce dirt and dust. The shower/bathrooms are very clean. Campers should take note that no pets are allowed which was unusual but I appreciated the quietness and we never had to clean dog poo off the kids shoes. The staff was friendly and helpful. We were there at the end of the season so there weren't many others. This place is popular and sells out early for the summer months. Summer is high season and fees are higher than skirt season but it's well worth it. All campsites are full hookups except for tent campsites. Make reservations well in advance

Wow - I just got back from 3 days on the Truckee and Little Truckee with Matt and I couldn't be happier. I have fly fished extensively throughout the Western United States and two things about this trip stuck out with me: I can't believe how fabulous these wild trout are and Matt Heron is in the top 1% of all the guides I have ever used!

He knows these rivers like the back of his hand and he is tenacious in making sure his clients have the best experience possible. He has a positive attitude, he is fun and he knows just the right balance between instructing versus letting you do you own thing. Your worst case scenario with Matt is you'll have a great day on the river. But if you want to learn, we will gladly make you a better angler.

I also like to fish with my teenage daughter, so I greatly appreciate the fact that Matt is polite, doesn't use profanity and isn't sneaking a smoke whenever I'm not looking. Sadly, I've had more than a few guides who don't fit this description.

I've already scheduled my next trip so I can settle a score with a few fish that broke my heart on this trip. I give Matt my highest recommendation without reservation!

Squaw Valley Ski Area

Famous ski area with Olympic memories.

Reviewed By Keith D - Atlanta, Georgia

I skied at Squaw Valley March 4 - 10 and we had sunshine filled days in the Mid 30’s and 100 plus inches of base snow. These days were 11’s on a scale of 1 to 10 and we felt like we were lucky to be skiing at this resort. I used the Squaw app but Squaw needs trail markers and signs on every run like they do in Colo.

Eagle Falls Trail

A beautiful and well-marked trail.

Reviewed By bverbos - Milwaukee, Wisconsin

The hike to Eagle Falls is an easy 1/2 mile, with a clearly marked trail, some elevation gain, and some rocky steps. The falls are visible at a bit of distance on the trail and from above at the falls themselves. If you continue to Eagle Lake it is about one more mile uphill with many rock steps. This part of the trail is rather strenuous and not recommended for children (despite what some tourbooks might say). The lake is quite scenic and you may need to relax on the rocks there for a rest. Returning on the rocky trail requires much care and I would strongly recommend against this trail in or close after rain.

Homewood Mountain Resort

Reviewed By Emiliamd13 - San Francisco, California

We bought a three-day pass for our children to learn how to ski and used it over the course of two trips while my husband and I enjoyed skiing on the large & glorious mountain.

Pros: Everyone is so nice and willing to help. The snow was amazing the year and there are two mountains you can enjoy with ease for a reasonable price (get -the 3 day pack).

The kids ski school is so good and our kids loved the experience. They also serve hot and healthy food at lunch time so you just have to worry about kidding your child to the school at 9 am and picking them up at 3:30 pm.

The mountain has a wide range of green, blue and black ranges. They also set up some jumping areas which our kids loved.

The views of Lake Tahoe are majestic as well when it isn't overcast.

Cons: The mountain is dated and the food options are very limited so bring a bag of goodies (including hot drinks) and enjoy them at the blue hut half way down the mountain otherwise you have to go all the way down to the one restaurant on the mountain.

If you want an alternative to Squaw that is less busy and hectic, I highly recommend Homewood!

Our family rented a 21' boat and float tube from SWA Homewood for an afternoon. Had a terrific experience from setting up the reservation all the way to disembarking from the boat. The staff was friendly and efficient. They gave us good tips for boating on the lake (our first time). My kids had a blast being towed on the tube! We ended the afternoon with a drink and some fantastic noshes on the patio at West Shore cafe with spectacular views of the lake. I highly recommend using SWA.
