What to do and see in Hoi An, Quang Nam Province: The Best Cooking Classes

May 19, 2021 Giuseppe Pratt

This city on the central Vietnamese coast is a well-preserved example of the important Southeast Asian trading port it was from the 15th-19th centuries. Already a common stop for backpackers, it is becoming better known to tourists. On the 14th day of each lunar month, the town trades its electric lights for traditional colored lanterns. Sights include the Japanese Covered Bridge and the Quan Cong Temple. Let the town’s expert tailors make you some bespoke clothing.

So much fun here! We were taken out on a bamboo boat and had jewellery, flowers made with coconut palms, then a walk through the magnificent herb gardens, doing our own planting and watering the garden the traditional way with buckets over the shoulders; the cooking class was so much fun!! You get to toss the pancakes at each other before sitting down to an amazing meal. Our host San and her sister were just so lovely. I would definitely recommend this to other travellers.

Thuan Tinh Island - Cooking Tour

Thuan Tinh Island is a small isolated island, around 3.5 km far from Hoi An Ancient Town, on Thu Bon River. Thuan Tinh Island is an eco-friendly island rich in tropical foliage making it a beautiful place to cook, relax and then enjoy the dishes you've created, Thuan Tinh Island Cooking Tour. We organize daily cooking classes at Thuan Tinh Island: pick-up at the hotels in Hoi An area. You will make your first stop at the market to purchase some fresh and locally grown herbs, before joining a river boat ride in 30 minutes to Thuan Tinh for a relaxing meander through what has been officially recognised as an ecological zone. To visit the local Village, we take a row boat ride through the water coconut trees. We then walk through the gardens to visit a local family and snack on grilled rice cakes and iced tea. From there, we head back to our open-air cooking class overlooking the water coconut trees and river. Our chefs will show you how to make Vietnamese food while you enjoy the cool breeze and peaceful setting. That is much more than simply a cooking class as a journey to discover the eco island that makes you satisfied.

Green Bamboo Cooking School & Cafe

The booking process and pick up from our hotel was trouble free. It’s a nice way to meet fellow travellers. 13 attended the cooking school on the day we booked and as everyone pre-chooses the dish they’re going to cook from a long and varied list we all left with full tummies, a free goodie bag and a smile on our face. Some even had a bottle of passion fruit vodka. Van is a lot of fun and her helpers make everything run very smoothly. Going to the local market to purchase all the cooking ingredients in the morning is a fascinating experience and contributes to a fabulous day. Well worth it, lots of fun and highly recommended.

My girlfriend and I went for the market tour followed by the cooking class. Our guide/teacher, Vi, was brilliant! We learnt lots about what to look for when buying fresh ingredients from the market and we had an excellent time turning them all into delicious dishes in the class on the island. One of my favourite memories of Hoi An and of our entire Vietnam trip!
